The Importance of Sunblock
« on: July 28, 2011, 05:25:15 pm »
Lesson learned, Last weekend after Albion we decided to hit Shelter Cove, the sun isn't even out, so I decided I should be OK fishing without any UV protection, How wrong I am!! Its not sunny but I can feel heat burning my skin, I said thats odd the sun is not even out but I feel like I am having a fever, so we were on the water probably the longest I've ever been, if we just didn't run out of food we would have stayed longer, as soon as we started loading I can feel a very painful sting from sunburn like I had second degree burn :smt009 when I finished cleaning the fish I can feel my face and skinhead tightening I said this is not good, tried to ignore it, I got home so late wifey was beyond pissed, so she slap me for making her worried I've never felt slap can be painful not because she did it in force it was a joke but the sensation burn..she said OMG you are burned!! I looked my self in the mirror never had sunburn like this before see picture and be the judge..now lesson learned sunblock hat etc..are a must to have sunny or not!!

Talk about a safety item!!! It's funny how we carry/wear a pfd, radio, gps, flag, wistle plb, strobe and sunscreen is something I always forget. Great reminder Darius, and hope you feel better.

I hate to say: "I told you so" Darius.  UVA will get you even on cloudy days!  Hope you'll heal well before the GS5.3  :smt003

I'll never eat Wheaties again  :smt044

Sorry Darius, that really looks pretty painful.  I always wear my hat, but still seem to get a racoon burn on my cheeks and forehead even with the hat on because of the reflection off the water.  I've done it too many times so now my watch is set to go off at 9AM and I put on the sunscreen then no matter what the conditions are. Keep a tube in my PFD pocket AND in my seat pocket, just in case.  :smt002

Darius, you have a shaved head- hat is SOP dude! Yikes that is a wicked burn (not the joke kind!)
Why didn't you just catch a pac hali for a parasol?

The thing about the sun is that we're all in this maness for the long haul and exposure is cumulative. I even put sunblock on the back of my hands these days.

thanks for the reminder D, it is an important one

What year is this?  :smt002

Looks nasty, D. Hope the pain eases quickly.

Wear polarized UV blocking sunglasses, too. UV rays also damage your eyes.

I feel your pain brother!

Spent a loooong day on Berryessa two summers ago on a super overcast day. Only in shorts and a shortsleeve with no sunblock. Next day my shins had huge blisters. Had horrible chills for two days. I was miserable!

ouch!

i believe the uv rays are stronger on overcast days because its like a magnify glass with the water droplets, so i always wear a hat (silly one at that) but it covers my neck, ears and has a bill. I also re-add sunblock throughout the day.

My dermo loves when I forget to use sunscreen...he sees it as another payment on his car when I come in for my next visit. Please wear it... it can save your life!

I did the bad leg burn thing at the HOW event at Kelsey last year. Won't happen again. Last weekmwhile building Wildernesshunters lumber rack I burned my right leg pretty bad welding. The skin is coming off in thick chunks as I type this. Seems worse than sunburn. My wife just got me a new sun hat at Costco. Huge brim, 100 SPF. $20. Booney style.

Darius, feel better soon.
