It was ling cod city out there today.  We weighed in a number of good sized lings as well as an impressive cabezone.

About 50 entrants gathered at 7am  and launced into flat but slightly ruffled seas. Anglers fanned out in search of big fish and glory. Wind was offshore, switched to SE, then back to E by 1pm. Gray skies and kinda cold.  Kelp beds out front are all underwater and sparse.

First fish weighed was from Ryan Baek, aka lingling.  He had the 8#6oz cabby and a BIG 13#14oz lingcod.  Looked tough to beat.  Phil Debord, aka Eyewabjkdalgnmdjt brought anther fat stomach ling to the table that weighed in at 13#15oz.  Unbelievable!!!  Phil took home the Trident 13 compliments of Ocean Kayaks, and Ryan received 2d place new angler edition paddle from MBK.  3d on the list was.....you guessed it, another lingcod.  Jim Gosciminski (Jimgosc) had a very decent 10#11oz fish.   Not bad for his first derby and.I believe, 2d time ever kayak fishing.  (he just bought his boat yesterday). Quite a few decent RF were caught, but none were close to being contenders.

Phil was fishing near the wharf and hooked his winner with a sardine.  Ryan worked the Coast Guard jetty with a hex bar, and Jim was out near the yellow can and found success with a whole squid. Jim's prize was a pair of new sunglasses.  I think we'll be seeing more of both Ryan and Jim in the future, and regarding Phil, what can I say?  He's been around a  while, and it's about time he got off that Big Game.  He was very very stoked, and I was totally stoked for him, Champ for the year, put it on your signature Phil!!  You got the glory this year.

Photos will be added as soon as I get them.  Feel free to post any shots you got below.

Thanks one and all for attending and for the support.  Remember, all the $$ besides what goes for Derby expenses is donated to The Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout project. Everyone wins.

We will do it again next year....thanks again.

Awesome day with my son and seeing many NCKA friends! No butts or lings for us but managed to catch enough rockfish for dinner. Was great to see da Mooch out on the water and looking great :thumleft: Congrats to Phil for landing that monster ling! Phil really deserves this new kayak :smt002. Many thanks to Allen, Aaron and the rest of the MBK crew for putting on such a great event. Looking forward to next year.

good times, thank guys for putting this on.  I had a 30 inch 10 pound 7 ounce ling.  Figured I was going to get a new paddle.  Not even on the podium  :smt010  Some real quality fish.  Not like some loser two years ago that won with a verm :smt044  Easy fellas, that was me, so I am allowed to dis myself.

When the A Hull pics are posted, shield your eyes lad and lassies, or you are sure to lose your sight  :smt003

Also in the pics will be sharkbait's patent pending shark shield.  So far so good  :smt007

What a day!!!!! MBK did another outstanding job in hosting this great get together! Thank you Allen, Aaron and all the staff of MBK!!! It was great to see many old and a few new faces. The competition was tight!!!!! I am very honored to have finally won this annual event as it is hosted by a great business and a really GREAT bunch of people! I do feel some pride in being able to say the locals kept the prize in their own back yard. I also want to give a big shout out to one of my heros Great Bass 2!!! Scott that rod and reel you made for me did the trick! It's my new secret weapon (as long as my "good friends" don't help it walk away)
Thank you to Aaron for putting up with me giving him such a hard time for the last few weeks and cooking up some great man dogs!    The food was great and really hit the spot! I can't wait for till I have the time to take this new T13 out and get a few even bigger fish   I wasn't able to take any pics as my camera is dead. I am looking forward to seeing the many that were taken.
All in all it was another great day on and off with a really good group of people. It is just an added bonus to be blessed with bringing a new yak home. I really needed it too

Migwech Mamogosnon! and lets get together and do it again next weekend.  :smt044

Congrats, Phil and the placers. Thanks Aaron and Allen. Had a great time competing. Caught some dabs, a few rockfish and an oh-so-close underling. Nice conditions, even with the drizzle for a little bit. Here are a few pix. Maybe someone else has pix of the winning monster lings.

Me and Da Mooch had the parking lot all to ourselves the night before for some soul searching, woke up to a full house, perty cool, kind of like waking up xmass morn to find a bunch of new snow on the ground...
so I managed a bunch of rockies, kept 2 decent browns, and a 25 ' ling, no boat-fish this time.....
a congrats to all the winners, good strategy... and thanx for the xtra fish scallen....long weekend pics later
