Deputies Search For Missing Kayaker
Man Last Seen April 28
POSTED: 11:06 am PDT May 4, 2010
UPDATED: 12:29 pm PDT May 4, 2010

BIG SUR, Calif. -- Sheriff's officials and the Coast Guard are conducting an air and sea search for a 51-year-old man who went missing at a Monterey County campground.
Randall Young, of Morro Bay, was last seen Wednesday at Plaskett Creek campground, which is located in the Los Padres National Forest. His girlfriend said he was on a solo kayaking trip, sheriff's officials said.
The campground is 13 miles north of the San Luis Obispo-Monterey County line.
A couple of kids found a 12-foot kayak on a beach near the campground, but deputies haven't confirmed if it belonged to Young or someone else.
Young's truck was also found at the campsite.
The Coast Guard is searching the waters with an 87-foot patrol boat, while an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station San Francisco is searching the coastal areas of Big Sur.
Deputies said Young is a Caucasian male, about 6 feet 3 inches tall with a medium build.
Anyone with knowledge of Young's whereabouts can call the Monterey Sheriff's Office at 831-647-7702.

Whether he was one of us or not, he is a fellow Kayaker, and I know we all are hoping for a good turnout. Proves out the fact though, too never go it alone.

When the friend went to check on Young after he didn't return, she found his car at the campsite but no sign of him or his belongings, according to the Coast Guard.

Interesting that his belongings are missing when his car was present.  Foul play?  Hope not.

I was down at Big Sur on 5/2 and the surf was pretty bad. Looked at several launch sites and it wasn't a tough call to abort the mission. My condolences to his family.
