Interesting that we supposedly had El Nino years in 1995 and 1998. Is that correct? Because they claim '95 was a Nino year in this news story. But I clearly remember the winter of '97-98 as being considered a Nino year.

they already are.  tuna caught last week at HMB buoy, about 14 miles from that harbor.

Tis true :(  Hoping it doesn't have a major affect on hurricane season - though I would imagine it would (I work for the Red Cross) - keep your fingers crossed

I was under the impression that El Nino caused a decrease in frequency and intensity of Atlantic hurricanes?

I've read a couple of differing articles - one that said it did decrease the possibility of Atlantic hurricanes, but El Nino warms waters - which would make it more common for hurricanes - still looking for answers I suppose

Is El Nino = a wet year in California or is it a drought year? I flunked "spanish lingo" in school. We could use some water. Lake Oroville is pretty dry.

As I understand it, and I freely admit that I am not an expert, El Nino (Spanish for hte Christ child and normally associated with December/Christmas) causes an unusually warm, wet pattern for central and southern California.  It is a relatively newly discovered phenomenon (in geologic/climatological time) and sample sizes are quite small, so I don't know how much stock to put into precip. forecasts, but that has been the trend.  Maybe there is a forensic climatologist around these parts that can shed light?

Yep, it's looking like it could be an interesting year. Mackerel in the Bay, white sea bass all over, tuna showing in good numbers, and that triggerfish caught in Capitola.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I was down at the beach today, the kids were ALL ecited saying the water was"hot". They were so excited.     "hot" doesnt typically describe our ocean temps. Found some really warm water out fishing too.
