The Local Fishing club and organization called "Humboldt area saltwater anglers" lobbied hard at last nights fisheries meeting to get at least a short stint of a sport  salmon fishing season. They realized early on that a decent season just wasn't in the cards but successfully got the board to include a 10 day (2 weekend) season this fall around labor day included in the proposal to be submitted for final approval in April. The area covers Eureka to Crescent city. There are goods runs of Klamath Salmon reported, but not enough for a full season. The hook was that it will be a much needed economic boon for the area. So mark these dates on your calendar Aug 29-sept 7 and come up to Humboldt  to ride the swells with Abking and I looking for the elusive King Salmon. The Klamath river will just be getting ready for it's fall run so a rivers to sea outing is very doable

It would be great to get even that short season.  Thanks for reporting, Hawk, but it's not final until the feds announce the rules in April, right?

No it's not a done deal yet but a good possibility, Keep your fingers crossed. One of the most exciting kayak fishing experiences I've had to date was going out fishing with you Eric from Trinidad 4 miles out in the big blue and watching you troll, catch, and land that big ol king while PB'ers looked on in amazement. River fishing for kings is fun but it doesn't have that raw heart pounding feel of the ocean, I can't wait to experience that again, it's Nirvana like.

That was a great time, Hawk, and salmon trolling is like Nirvana.  I was loving the Eel and the redwoods today, but I miss the ocean bad.

Two years ago when the Salmon fishing was WFO out of Eureka, we were going 8 miles out and about 4 miles up on a little 4 Pack. There were people in boats about 4 miles south of the harbor entrance too. A tremendous school of fish to say the least.

Dropped a downrigger 80' and when it reached that depth Gary said he was surprised the bait hadn't been hit yet. Took all of 2 minutes to get a fish on and around an hour for 4 limits + a limit for the captain.

I went out on 4 consecutive days with limits each time and back at the dock before 10:00. Biggest fish for me was 28# but a buddy caught one that went 40# from 120' deep.

Did anyone on a yak do any good then?

I'm starting to get a stiffy just thinking about the possibility of a little ocean Salmon.
The fishing was so good I thought I was there yesterday!

Yeah!  I can' wait, I have yet to catch a Salmon out of the ocean.  I have caught a lot of river fish, but they are not near as clean and bright.  Finally here is my chance!  Matt

Check out this old report:  http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,9540.0.html

It's a tough assignment to catch salmon out of Humboldt Bay.  We were trying to get to 300' of water NNW of the Jaws.  Not only was it an extremely flat day to be able to launch and land just north of the north jetty, but it was so flat you couldn't even register a swell.  Even with it that flat we were dominated by a N-S current and could not get out there.  I think we paddled the equivalent of 15-20 miles because that current slammed us.  Shelter Cove is the place to catch salmon from a kayak.  I dream of future salmon trolling at the Cove on my kayak.   :smt001
