Favorite Beer
« on: December 11, 2008, 11:27:25 pm »
I know everyone has their favorite brew, and with the winter comes a lot of the seasonal beers.  WHat is everyones favorite?

My favorite right now is Shiner Bock out of Texas, damn good stuff slightly dark but very smooth. Safeway carries it from time to time for $6.99-8.99 a six.  Goes with everything.

For those of you in the Redwood City area Grocery Outlet has some interesting Micro Brews cheap.  I have had some really good ones, some so-so ones and some God Awelful ones, but at $4.00 a six you can afford to try it, and if it sucks oh well your out 4 bucks, if its great, it won't be there the next time you go.  The stuff from Meritorius Brewery (out of the North East, has flyfishing art deco on it) not to shabby.

. . . . My favorite right now is Shiner Bock out of Texas . . .

Hmm, Bock beer from Texas, eh? Sounds interesting.

I like the R5 from Bear Republic, too, but have been on a kick for their Hop Rod Rye, a strong american IPA with 20% rye malt for a little less bite than the R5. It is more difficult to find than R5, but worth it

Man, this is a tough question. If I went by what I buy the most of, it would be Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

If I chose my favorite by what I crave the most, it would be Oak Creek Brewery Nut Brown Ale. You can't get it in California, but it's brewed in Sedona, AZ and available at most Arizona grocery stores. When I got married, I didn't have many demands for our wedding, but I absolutely required that a keg of this be at my wedding reception and instead of toasting with champagne, I had a glass of Oak Creek Nut Brown in my hand.  :smt007

My favorite beer that I've had here in California, North Coast Brewery Scrimshaw Ale.

Man, what a stressful question! Beer is serious business to me! :smt044 :smt005

It really depends on what I'm doing and how I feel. Most of the time I enjoy a nice IPA like Red Hook. Other times, I like to pickup some bottles from the local brewery down the street, called English Ales. They have one called Dragonslayer that is killer.
But there is always a place in my heart/stomach for The Silver Bullet!

It depends on the situation and mood for me as well. Steelhead camp in the redwoods goes good with Red Seal, Scrimshaw, or obviously Steelhead ale. Tossing frogs on a hot summer evening calls for very chilled Coronas. Downtown Brown is good anytime.
Kiltlifter is becoming a favorite too.

Favorite beer? I'm hoping to figure that one out some day.  Right now I'm too busy doing research.  I have access to something like 30 microbreweries right here in Portland (a.k.a. Beervana).  The beers in the Pacific Northwest tend to be hop-centric and I'm quickly becoming a hop head.  My current favorite is a beer named Fred (actually it's more of a barley wine) from the Hair of the Dog Brewery about a mile from my house.

Pliny the elder is pretty good stuff, another brew that I enjoy is Weihenstephaner Korbinian dopplebock - very malty and high ABV with a candi sugar note, it's kind of an IPAs malty nemisis.  ;)  In South Dakota I had some Leinenkuegels sunset wheat, which I thought was very good, it had blueberry and a sweet lemony flavor - apparently it's a divisive beer though because it's derided on the internet by some as tasting like liquid fruity pebbles.  If I could have one beer for a party though, I'd probably go with anchor steam.

We had an IPA 'style of the month' day at the brewclub last may or so, and our 'homework' assignment was smoked beers.  We tasted about a dozen smoked beers that folks made and something like 20 IPAs, including hop rod and racer 5.  I'd really encourage folks that enjoy beer to brew some, at least a few times.  Being able to smell and taste the ingredients and beer at the various stages on it's way to completion really changes ones appreciation for beer.   It's like the difference between listening to an opera in another language before and after learning that language.  I'd be happy to help anyone out getting started.  The club I'm in is the draught board in san leandro.
