Yep, AM is all gone. No need to ever go there again. Kayak fishermen lost a good one...

OK here are a few more.  That was one of the best places I have ever fished and I was only there twice.

I was planning to start an MPA farewell tour summary as I did get to hit a fair number of the currently closed areas this season.  I will post a list of the ones I hit along with who was there and some pictures and others can pitch in until we have all of the areas covered.

Looking at the chart I think it still might be fishable in the pocket between the 27, 23, and 29 fathom marks. Straight out. Should be about 1.8 miles :smt011

From what I can tell the blue area is only legal for Salmon and albacore, no rockfish or lings  :smt009 .  Who is going to haul a yak down there to chase salmon?  Maybe Blue?

Good point I didn't look at the regs for the blue area. I'll take a look but I assume it is going to not allow for the take of groundfish.

=ohn,

Exactly...  Hence the Tongue in Cheek <TIC> tags in my original post. Seriously, pick your day, paddle an efficient boat, and fish the area outside the MPA.

Losing the areas close to AM is a setback, no doubt about it, but it's not like there aren't options. In fact, I predict that within a couple years, we have folks launching at AM, and doing a one way trip on down the coast and overnighting. Something that wouldn't have been considered by kayak anglers in the past, because there was no need to do so.

Regards,
Scott

[Not that it can't be done] but you would have to be an Extremely Strong paddler (or not very smart...or pick the best day of the year) to launch at Molera and paddle south to Cooper Pt and fish. Then paddle back.
True, it is not very far (distance wise) by some people's standards, but it is very dangerous. And you would most likely be fighting the prevailing conditions, wind and swell.

I've been researching the viability of a week long rogue kayak-camping trip down the Big Sur coast. And it is do-able. Maybe next summer.

Regardless, the Pt Sur SMR and SMCA are CRAP!
