That's almost scary.  I saw photos once where a lobster bit a guys pinky fingertip off at the bank, too far away to get to a hospital, he just tossed it overboard (his finger).  There was a debate about wether the lobster actually bit him, or if it slapped his finger hard enough with it's tail to remove his finger like a shear...  Anyway, I'm going to be careful with the buggers.

I don't think spiny lobsters have pinchers, or if they do they don't have any size to them..

I plan on bringing an extra thick pair of garden gloves to wear over my dive gloves for that.
I saw the photos of the pinky incident. Ouch!

No pincers, but they can sure SPIKE you like a mofo. Seems like every inch of them is sharp & jabby.

Maybe a good pole spear could do the trick?

I wonder if it would work to use a shark shield whip to taze them when they're in the hole so they can be retracted.  Works for electric rays...  ;)  Spearing them is a no-no, though I guess you're allowed to have a spear on you and there's a 'don't ask - don't tell' policy about what you do with the spear when you're down there as long as the lobsters don't have holes in their heads.

I guess I won't know until I try it though.  I have noticed that folks seem to like using thinner gloves for lobsters, probably so they can feel the lobster when they reach into a hole up to their shoulder.  Then you just hope a moray or wolf eel isn't co-habitating with the bug and takes offense...  Maybe a leather glove on the right hand would be helpful.  What's the SST down there? 65'?  Kids stuff.  ;)

There is a pic of a big lobster on the wall of fame at the Capitola Wharf. Not sure about the story behind it...but I was surprised to see one that big caught up here.

I know its probably illegal, but I've heard stories of guys using mops to get lobsters out of their hidey holes. Just stick the mop end in the hole and twist.
