i was paddling in pv this summer, pushing hard into the wind and waves, when the metal shaft on the 2 piece paddle snapped at the locking buttons.  i paddled back with one blade, hawaiian style.

Just paddle with your hands
Maybe in FW wouldn't have made any headway with the out go and the 20mph head wind.

you can also use the center hatch of your Fish N Dive as a paddle
Maybe in FW but not in the ocean, believe me I thought about it.

here's a cool little spare paddle for under $20.00...
Joel I had a canoe paddle with me couldn't make any headway. I think with a swell it would have worked as the swells push toward shore, but it was flat as soon as I stopped my bow came around and I was drifting sideways at almost 3mph on the GPS.

Spare paddle is the way to go, I won't go again without one.

Way to make it work! Glad you got in, its spooky when something like happens.
I had the same thing happen with my cheapie (fiberglass shaft, plastic blades) whitewater surfing paddle last thanksgiving. I had just set up for a nice La Conchita beachbreak wave. Check over the shoulder-looks good, I'm about to drop in...one more paddle stroke to cement the deal annnd crrrack! Paddle shaft split at the base of the blade. I was totally committed to the wave then, so I ended up doing a braced side surf into the beach.
I did a quick fix & scored a couple more waves, then after I got home I globbed the shaft with gorilla glue. I have used the paddle since for fitness, but am reluctant to surf with it again. I'm pretty sure it is a voyager paddle as well.
I'll be interested to see what response you get from the manufacturer.
Sounds like there may be some quality issues with Voyager paddles, I have always liked Harmony and Werner-very dependable product.

Solsrf, I agree.
I got the voyager as a beginning paddle for surfing. I have a werner of unknown age with who-knows-how-many miles on it, and it is still solid.

Well, did you land the seal or what?  You should have just thrown bait out in front of the kayak and make the seal tow you in.  Glad you made it back to shore.

There's got to be an easier way to justify a new paddle! :smt044

All things working out in the end makes for a cool story, Mike!

Mike.....you can also use the center hatch of your Fish N Dive as a paddle  :smt002

I did the same at Lake Del Valle last week :smt013 I almost always leash my paddle but I forgot to bring it this time...anyway, here I'am thinking that it was leashed, so I tossed the paddle to the side of the kayak while I was trying to land a bass...as soon as I had lipped the bass, I reached for my paddle only to see it floating away  :BangHead: I used the center hatch of my Trident (had to cut the line attached to it) to paddle my way to my run-away paddle :smt002

A day on the water is always a learning experience  :smt045

I am surprised you didn't try to cast your fishing line over it and reel it towards you.
I am definitely going to be getting an extra paddle.
