I just saw a video on my wife's phone of 2 guys in kayaks that were rescued somewhere off the Sonoma coast. they both looked healthy and fine. It looked like one was wearing a cotton hoodie. I just wanted to remind people not to be a dumbass when in the ocean. It seems like I am seeing more and more of these "Fresh and salty" guys out on the coast who are paddling $5000 worth of kayak and electronics while wearing jogging pants and a cotton hoodie. Please don't be that guy.

… I just wanted to remind people not to be a dumbass when in the ocean…

This year, I’d guess that I saw more kayak fisher-people on the water in street clothes than in all previous years combined. The ones I talk to never seem to have heard of NCKA, so I think you’re preaching to the choir…

I just watched Adam’s YT crabbing video from Rockaway and it shows an incident with a guy who flipped and couldn’t get back on his kayak. He was wearing vinyl waders! glad he didn’t drown. Nearby kayakers came to the rescue.

I agree, I've seen this a fair bit lately, too. No wetsuit, drysuit, or PFD.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

The news article actually said the kayakers were wearing pfd's and wet suits.

Quote from the article:
"The individuals did not suffer any injuries and were not experiencing hypothermia, Nunes said.

They had been wearing wet suits, were dressed warmly and each had life jackets. They looked prepared for the trip, but seemed surprised by the strength of the current, Nunes said."

Looks like they got sucked out of Tomales bay with the tide.

And then the next day it happened to another group who also needed to be rescued.

The tidal currents there can be extreme.

Thanks for sharing. Good to know.

Back in the early eighties my dad would fish the mouth of the klamath. On occasion a boat would be swept out. I cant remember if it was the coast guard or Fish and wildlife would maintain a vessel on the outgoing tide for safety.

Lawson's Landing fishing report is always a good read. In this case, he ties together crabbing and kayakers getting swept out to sea: "Let's remember, we eat them, not vice versa."

Since everyone made it home safely, I feel ok indulging my curiosity...what happens to the kayaks in these situations? out to sea forever?
