I’m always looking for different ways to cook the fish I catch, and have recently picked up an air fryer.
My question is, has anybody cooked rockfish fillet’s in an air fryer?
How did it turn out and were you happy with the results?
Thanks

I haven't cooked raw fish in my air fryer, but anything that comes home frozen and flash-fried/frozen comes out pretty good.  Fries, fish sticks, chicken tenders, etc.

What kind of recipe are you going for?  If a fried-fish kind of outcome, use your normal batter/coating, but then spray it with oil before cooking.  If a baked fish, season as normal and go for it.  The air fryer relies heavily on surface oil to create the "fried" effect, otherwise it is very similar to a convection oven.  If using thin fillets, I think it would be easy to overcook in the air fryer if not careful.

SUPER EASY,

Just dont use a wet batter, but some kind of seasoned binder and bread crumbs come out great.

My favorite is just some canned chipotle sauce/peppers chopped up and mixed with some avocado mayo over fresh rockfish cut into taco sized pieces. I have also done some cream cheese stuffed dishes with rolls of salmon and steelhead. And can't go wrong w some butter lemon garlic in a tin foil pack.

I think its 370 F for 12 minutes or something? There is a fish button on mine and I just up the temp a bit. Set it and forget it, super easy and no oil to deal with. best after a long day fishing lol

Davethesynthguy says he prefers leftover conventionally fried fish reheated in the air frier lol.

Thanks for the tips!  It worked! and I was pleasantly surprised! so good
The idea was Fri night fish and chips…
I used the cabazone loin strips, cut into 1-2” nuggets , had 6
Used an egg for binder and Panko / seasoning salt as the breading
NowI had never used an air fryer and was pretty skeptical that it would as good as we usually make it .  man was I wrong!
Our neighbor gave us this thing called an Insta pot with a Mealthy lid that plugged in, (that was the air fryer.) It sat around for a long while and never got used but tonight I decided to use it!
It  was fun learning a new cooking technique.
the recipe called for doing the potatoes first then the fish then throw the potatoes back in for two minutes.
I’ve got to say it turned out way better than I expected and
it was moist and sooo good!!
the potatoes turned into chips after 10 minutes at 425, stir and another 10 minutes at  425. the fish was 4-5 minutes at 425 turn it over and another 4-5 minutes.
thinner fillets lower the cook time and drop to 400
What Speedystein said about putting a coating of oil on the crumbs is very important and I would also recommend it! I tried brushing veg oil on as well as the spray ( spray somewhat blew the crumbs off).
The panko got golden and a light crunch , seemed to seal it  so it kept moisture in the fish.  I’d like to get the coating better but figure there is a learning curve here.
As for the chips I learned that you should use smaller batches so they don’t pile on top of each other, they cook faster then too

I’ll be using this new  little toy in the kitchen alot more now! :smt006

If you have a filet slice with a fat end and a thin end, slice the skinny end off the skin and fold it up and toward the fat end and toothpick it in place. That way the slice has a more uniform thickness so it cooks to the same doneness all over.

Instant read thermometer (a real instant read, not a slow one) really helps to check doneness.

You can reduce clean-up effort if you are just cooking a piece or two by placing them on little pieces of foil, oiled first.

I had good results air frying halibut in a foil packet with some different kinds of oils along with herbs, green onions, etc.  Stays moist.

When you run out of fish, marinated tofu (firm) cubes cook well in the air fryer. Just about any spices snd sauces, but make sure they are coated in oil, soak 15 mins or more.

I had a small basket type air fryer and it worked well, but recently got a Cosori combo air fryer, toaster, baker, broiler combo that works better.  Its about 18" x 15" x 15".  I can bake stuff in without heating up the house like my gas oven does.

These are great tips. I'll have to try them.  Meanwhile I use my air fryer to reheat fried fish leftovers for fish tacos the next day.  It works great for that for sure.
