Decided on an iron duck ultra vue 18 to use as a haka for the AI.  Ordered directly from iron duck.  Installed seadeck and will attach it with NRS cam straps.  Total weight is 18 lbs.  I'm going to use it for sailing, kid seat for fishing, crabbing, etc.  It is pretty bomber.  I could totally walk on it, and iron duck says it floats and supports 250lbs in the water, so there is a decent emergency option there too.  Pretty happy with it.  I'll report how it does otw.

Great idea! Would love to see pics of  it strapped on. My kids complain about getting their butts wet on the trampolines no matter how tight I pull the straps

Nice! Thanks for sharing. I’ve got parts for the same project that I’m hoping to get done by crabbing season. I also picked up a Hobie hiking stick to extend the control of the rudder if I’m sitting out on the new Hakas. Let us know how the cam straps hold it all together. I was thinking to use ball bungees alone but have not tried it yet.

That looks bomb-proof, and I’m sure it’ll work great.

On of my winter projects is lightweight haka benches…

... iron duck says it floats and supports 250lbs in the water ...

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m not seeing it. I looked at the mfgr website, the board is 72 x 16 x 1.75 inches, or 2016 cubic inches. It’s not actually 2016 cu in because the board has a bunch of holes for carry handles and it is tapered on the end, not actually rectangular. If it was a solid rectangle to the dimensions given, it would be 2016 cu inches, it’s not, so it is something less than that. But let’s go with the number 2016.

There are 1728 cu inches in a cubic foot. A cubic foot is 7.48 gals of water. A gal of water is 8.3 lbs. See where this is going? To float 250 lbs you need to displace about 4 cu feet of water. Per the dimensions on the website, that board just isn’t 4 cu ft of roto-molded plastic. It’s more like 1.17 cf feet, so it will only float something more like 77 lbs (minus the 16 lbs of the board weighs, so something closer to 61 lbs). Now take into account the tapered end and the holes for carry handles and I doubt you get 50 lbs of buoyancy out of that board.

Yup! The spec sez it has 250 lbs of “float capacity” but I’m not seeing how it could do that if there is not enough to it to displace 4 cu ft of water. It doesn’t have any freeboard so all it can displace is it’s own volume.

Looks like about an inch of foam cushion on the top of it :smt001

I too think such claims for spine boards are questionable, at best. It would be interesting if the OP put it to the test…

My DIY PVC Haka  :smt003

I’ve got a PVC ladder-like thing attached to one side of my AI, but it’s too flexible for me to sit on. It’s great for extra storage space….

This PVC HAKA is intended for my fish bag and crab hoops.

Sure.  Ill report back.  Im doubting that as well, but who knows?  I weigh ~240 lbs.  I needed something pretty rigid for a passenger to sit on, and this doesnt hardly flex at all.  I like it, but we will see how it goes.  The seadeck on it is a must.  The original surface is very slick.  Not too sure if that adds to the buoyancy, but I imagine it does incrementally.
