Allen -

pretty big yak your fishing from these days.  :smt005 :smt005

scott

I guess I'm busted.   :smt053  Every now and then you just need to fish on a big boat.  That day I was with Bill and AllenB and we had planned to hit up the albacore, but the winds weren't cooperating so we beat it up to Ano.  It looks like that was the last time I'm going to get to fish Ano.   :smt010  It was kind of a humorous experience though.  Here's what I had posted at the time on another board.

Having lost all of our 8 ounce jigheads earlier, I decided to improvise.  I had some larger hexbars with big trebles on them.  I had lost 2 earlier in the day within minute of deploying them.  Bill had been fishing some of his hand poured rootbeer worms with good success on smaller lings so he suggested I try it.  So what did I do?  I took the treble off a 10-12 ounce hexbar and attached a 10/0 hook to the top of the jig.  I then threaded a rootbeer worm on the hook.  When Captain Gerry saw that he said, "What the hell is that enormous contraption? What are you going to do, drop it on their heads and knock them out?".  I responded with a "you'll see".  Then I sarcastically backed it up with "I'll probably lose it within 2 minutes".  As soon as I hit bottom, my rod loaded up.   Everyone laughed at me for snagging up so soon.  Then my rod bounced and I just smiled.  Up comes a 16# ling!!!  I dropped back down and immediately hooked up again.  10# ling in the box!!!  I love it when a plan comes together.

I hate to be a simpleton, but what has worked very well for me is a real cheap (under $2.00) home made jig.

I take an 8 oz. torpedo lead weight, install a snap ring on one end with a big treble hook. I paint the weight white and then paint the top red, using some cheap WalMart spray paint.

You can even add a little bit of squid to the hook as a booster. It's simple, cheap, and it works!

Well there it is, right out of my grandpa's tackle box! That is exactly what he used to do and what he taught us to do, and after all these years I had forgotten. I'm going retro!!! thanks for the reminder.

I don't like scampi's as much as my magical curly tail. You know it rocks, you have witnessed it's power  :smt003

Bill's rt.beer curly tail is now deemed "theCabBuster"! he told me if that i take it?, I must not deviate from it and you will have your first CABBIE, he guaranteed it!

I am a BELIEVER of it's POWERS

Pole Pole, your improvised lure reminds me of a "mud raker", except a mud raker usually has a hoochie instead of a curly tail.

Mahi Mahi, I do like your home made jig.  I may make a few and I think I'm going to refer them as "Ukiah Torpedos".

Bill, I can't believe I've been a member of NCKA since the beginning and never had a chance to test your hand poured lures myself.  I've done well in raffles, but not once did I manage a bag of your swimbaits.  With rockfish closing here Oct 1 and my moving away shortly there after, I guess I won't have to worry about getting addicted to your 'crack'.  At one point you inspired me enough that I even bought a gallon of plastic to pour my own, but never got around to it.

And now you know the source of my inspiration.

Take a hammer to the Ukiah Torpedo and give it some random action before you paint it.   :smt002

I'd be hurt, but I'm so backwoods that I think my AOTY points are looking good with 4 more fish to catch!
