My younger son is at UC-Davis, and my wife wants to go see him this Saturday (he, on the other hand, is not so keen on the visit, but that's another story...). I might be able to get an early start and have a few hours for (what else?) fishing. Unfortunately, it'll probably have to be bank fishing. Does anybody have any suggestions?
I don't like stuff that sucks.

American River specifically the sunrise access area or sailor bar area is popular right now for salmon and stripers. There may be some decent steelhead fishing around the lower portions by the clay banks. There's a little bass pond not much further away by the Rancho Cordova mather area. And if you're up for a 1hr drive Pardee has begun stocking trout for the season. Someone may have more suggestions but these are the ones off the top off my head for this time of year.

My son just started his first year at UC Davis also!
Discovery park in Sac is only about a 30 min drive down I80 but watch out for the transients.  Barge access is free access but not sure how bank fishing is there.

Fly fishing on Putah Creek can be fun if you're into it. Snakes and poison oak make it a little less fun this time of year though
