Back when I used to sea kayak there were some that made the SC to Monterey crossing in groups. It was not considered crazy.

In a group.  Long prepared. usually with a PB safety boat or two, if I remember correctly.

Huang:  Numbah Wan Xtra Lahge is an enigma wrapped in a riddle.  He can only reveal himself. This is the way.

Glad you are getting a radio.  Even if your hand-held VHF is not picking up anything after a few miles, it can still be heard, or "received" by the Coast Guard from many dozens of miles away. I have reached Monterey Coast Guard station broadcasting from Santa Cruz in the past. They use 'repeaters" on top of mountains circling the Bay and paralelling the Coastline. The CG can transmit at a much higher power also, to reach you while a private boat radio is not able.  Maybe think about flare gun and a GPS to include on your safety item list if you don't have already.

Bushy, first thing I  thought is this has to be Chet getting a friend to translate into Chinese wechat posts

Mr Xia Huang seems to like similar adventures anyway

"&" said it best, I think. Huang doesn't mind dying, that might be a cool way to go. Numbah Wan Xtra Lahge could probably SWIM to the Farralons. (Or, swim back if he had to.)

Bushy

Hi bushy,
Numbah Wan Xtra Lahge Is a person name? Who is he?
By the way, I need to correct your imagination on Me: :smt003
1) I am a shy, timid and small guy, I do mind to be dying
2) That is why I am trying my luck to find a fishing partner here to be back up each other. With partner, the safety coefficient will be dramatically higher. But I just do it if no partner
3) Every time when I am going to ocean, I always ask myself: How risk is it? If I will die, definitely I won’t go. Keep in live is definitely my first priority. But for some unnecessary worries, I just ignore it, for the example, people will die in car traffic incident, so I scare to drive car? No! Same as playing kayak  :smt003
4) Walk through the edge of the die by well prepared, that is ultimate pleasure, no other happiness like orgasm can compete this ultimate happiness. The soul is calling me to be there. This doesn’t mean I don’t mind to be dying, I do.

In other words, in the end, we all will die, I want to extend my life by experience more, I like adventure because I treasure my life. Sound conflict statement, huh? hahaha.  :smt011 :smt001 :smt001

Chet is a good fisherman.  Bushy was making a distasteful comment about accents.

That was one of the revolving screen names of a long time member my man.

I can’t even believe that it would need to be said; Bushy is as standup of a guy as they come and certainly no racist, xenophobe or any of the other labels that hippies like to apply to people these days.

Just so damn righteous in his indignation and so quick to make a casual accusation of racism.

It's pretty incredible when you think about it, but it happens so very often out in the wild.

I legit thought he was making a joke because of numba wah or whatever his current screen name is.  But no.

Xia, I think this challenge you are taking on is very intriguing.  It certainly is possible what your are proposing, but I would really like to know how you planned this crossing.  I'm interested in how you would research just such a crossing, as it has been something I've wondered about doing.  I know you might be intimidated by the response you have received, but I would really like to hear more.  I wont try and discourage you, but I will wish you well.  If I didn't have a bad itch to try for salmon, I'd offer to see you in on the other side and give you a ride.  Actually, if I get one in the morning, maybe I will still drive down to Monterey to meet you.

In lieu of a partner that can shadow you during your crossing, have you considered a GPS tracking device like a PLB?

If I was 20 years younger and 30 lbs lighter I’d tail along on one of those trips

Pushing yourself on distances is a thing worth doing if you have the time You should also be fit enough but if you aren’t when you start you will be when you’re done

This is a safety oriented community here but I have to say for decades the only safety gear I had with me was a knife a line to the nose of my yak and a couple cans of Coke Then as I went further offshore I added a couple of compasses, the old fashion kind no electronics

This just reminded me of my fav Jimmy Buffett song.  No, I'm not officially old enough to know that song, but I do have the vinyl, haha.
