Hello!

I was wondering if anyone has had luck catching Sanddabs around Half Moon Bay or Pacifica? I've seen reports of SC/Monterey but was curious if they can be found closer to the Bay Area. Would love any tips, seems like generally you need to fish pretty deep?

Thanks!

They're at around ~120 feet in HMB.

That seems to be true in Monterey too.
I wonder if that's the case every place.

Sanddabs can be found much shallower and much deeper.  The quality/size of them is what your looking for at different depths.  In Monterey I would normally go to 180fow to find nice size dabs.  During MBK I was finding small ones at 90fow, so probably bigger out past 120+ For HMB that looks to be out past the red can per this chart: http://fishing-app.gpsnauticalcharts.com/i-boating-fishing-web-app/fishing-marine-charts-navigation.html?title=Clear+Lake+boating+app#13.7/37.4826/-122.5130

Thanks for all of the great information in all of your replies! It kind of looks like Monterey would be a further drive but less of a pedal out compared to HMB. Based on the chart it looks like Moss Landing gets pretty deep relatively quickly as well. I haven't tried launching out of HMB but based on the charts it looks like the 120+ FOW is a good distance out, anyone have any idea how long of a pedal that is?

Navionics says from Jaws to the Green Can is 0.8miles.  Straight west from the Green Can to approximately 120ft is roughly 2miles.  Sounds far, but not really, considering that from Jaws to the Red Can is 1.5miles.

I might take my boat out of Moss landing Sunday. If I do I will drop a line out at about 80 ft on the north side and see if they are biting.

Definitely might not be as bad as it looks on the map especially if you're just drifting for them and resting your legs. Thanks for that approximation!

Awesome, looking forward to seeing how you do if you go for them!
