I’m going to take the arms along when I go out deep. Thanks for the input.

I’m going out 3-5 miles. I don’t leave my house without a PLB, safety first. The peace of mind enables the voyage.

$600 on a safety net that needs to be tested regularly seems a little excessive.

If you're talking about the SS, it never needs to be tested. If you really want to test it, you can just put your hand near it in the water and you'll feel the electric pulse.

I’ve been reading about a SS test device. That is what I was referencing.

How did the fish respond?

According to research, (by the mfr and others) the effect of a SS on regular fish which do not have the Ampullae of Lorenzini receptors is negligible “in the protective field” produced by the SS. It’s another thing if they actually touch the wand, just as if you do.

For what it's worth, I have many times while diving seen lingcod "shiver" when my SS is dragged past them 2-3 feet away. They definitely feel it, and I would guess by their actions that it is irritating to them.

Please don't shoot great white sharks. I just wanted to get that on the record.

The idea of shooting a great white shark because it "is attacking you" doesn't really make sense mechanically to me. Once you've been attacked you will likely be in the water, disoriented and barely treading water. So, what's your plan? Pull out your gun and shoot? Will the gun be in a holster on your belt? (If it's in your kayak, then forget it.) And what do you suppose the shark will be doing -- shoving its head from the water and gnawing at the air about ten feet away, providing a wide open shot while you spit and sputter in the waves?

On the other hand, if you are talking about shooting a shark from your kayak while still high and dry, then in my opinion you haven't really been attacked, and therefore you have no business shooting the animal. I was in a kayak that got bumped from below by a great white. (It was pretty cool, to be honest.) In that situation, would a gunslinger get out their firearm and start shooting? I hope not.

I'd like to remind you all that in 2009, advocates for strictest version of the MLPA (look it up if you need to) made public arguments for implementing marine protected areas in order to protect great whites from harassment and harm by recreational anglers. I thought it was a stupid argument without merit at the time, and the guy got called out by a livid Coastsider for voicing it at a meeting - but maybe it wasn't such a dumb point. Wouldn't it be a hoot if this whole conversation was being followed by folks at Ocean Conservancy, NRDC, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Shark Stewards and the CA Fish and Game Commission?

The drift of the thread was mostly about how to protect yourself from sharks, which is probably a futile thing. I doubt anybody here will be going out shark shooting anytime soon. A big shark would probably be unfazed anyway

On the other hand if I was in a situation like what Bushy was in recently I’d reach for whatever was handy and probably wish I had something better on hand. I forget if he had a SS going or not

Luck is either on your side or it’s not

I’m a trifle more interested in SSs after NWMs posts since I spend so much time in the water now and some of it in pretty sharky spots

Btw a whole other topic but none of the organizations you mention with the exception of F&G deserve any respect

If you get your hand close enough to the SS, you'll feel it. Of course, any fish that gets within that same range will feel the shock, and I doubt any will like it. But only sharks and rays will be able to sense the electrical field from a greater distance. So, if you plan to fish 3 feet directly below your kayak, or you plan to fish for sharks or rays, then the SS might reduce your catch. Otherwise, not...

I’m in salmonella’s camp on this one, if one was harassing me they way BushMan was harassed and I had a flare gun handy or whatever I wouldn’t hesitate

Ive seen them a few times and they have a way of raising the goosebumps for sure But then over the years I  developed the opinion that when you can see them is probably when they pose the least threat

Some of my more nervous days were when I didn’t see them but boats pulled up to let me know they’d seen one in the vicinity, like bolinas a few times where they tend to prowl the mouth for mammals and are all over the zone anyway

And once at HMB coming in w two salmon I just bled w blood all over my yak and guy on a boat says fyi there’s a big shark cruising here somewhere, then a few minutes later I saw it off in the triangle headed my general direction then another boater says Hey fyi there’s a big shark cruising the area

I wouldn’t hesitate to shoot at one of these beasts under any circumstances, but reality is that’s not likely to be the scenario

Hear hear.

As per the post topic, I’m all in about shark deterrence and a SS is on my short list.  It went from the want list to the need list.   :smt001

Don’t mind if others have the SS as well when we’re fishing together. Just saying.

So take your fate, get chomped and die, wait. For another pass. Great plan. Poor shark.

Freedom 7. Make sure you get the "C" model, or it says that it's guaranteed for 1000 recharges (the "B" model is just 300 recharges, so big difference)...
