Well we did the Moutcha Bay tourney 4 day trip and was insane to say the least.

After waking up 12AM and hitting the road we made it to Moutcha Bay at 2PM. Yes it is a long way from Seattle and the second after the camp was set up we were on the water. First, the bay is literally in the middle of nowhere. We drove on gravel roads for 45 min. so there were no noises of any kind around us. The water was glass and followed Pole2 to the first spot. As I started to get closer I could see fish not only surfacing but fully coming out of the water... Chinook to what looked like 30 lbs.. :smt119 It took no more than 3 seconds later that my FF lit up w/ a massive school. I dropped my jig straight into it and 5 min. later got an unbelievable tug. Completely bendo!! :smt118 It felt like it was well hooked and the sleigh ride began. It did the whole thing... bobbin' weavin' jumping diving. I wrestled it to the surface about 15 min. later and she was heeeuge. She split to the bottom and decided to run out fast. Top speed I clocked was 2.8 MPH. :smt110 After what felt like 20 min. she got a little tired and Pole2 gave me an assist to land the fish.. 25 lb. Chinook female! :metal

OK right there the trip was a success for me. But it went on. I didn't notice it but the fish hadn't stopped jumping all around us. There were salmon everywhere. Later on I got myself another 4 chinook but released them all... none under 18 lbs. Some were pretty dark so decided to go after the lighter ones. All in all, including released fish, caught about 7.. :smt004 gotta say it was a good day!

The next two days were pretty much carbon copies of the first totaling 4 fish kept from 18-25 lbs. Including released fish, caught a total of about 16 fish for the trip. :smt004 The wife took the eggs from the catch and cured them w/ soy sauce and sake... unreal on rice! Needless to say the fishing was off the heez but also the scenery was unbelievable. There were some really nice bear sightings as well as some eagles. The people @ Moutcha Bay were also a class act and super helpful all the way. A definite not to miss tourney in this lifetime!

Actually I think you know her, Caroline. She landed a 29.8 lbr. She deserved it, fished hard w/ her daughter in the back hatch of her SIK! Her husband was doing the same w/ their son in the back hatch. A full on kayak fishin' family!

BTW FH, you're invited for next year.. :smt002

My weekend was exactly like Z's.  Lot's and lots of salmon.

I brought 21 salmon to the leader up to the high 20's.  I hesitate to call any 30, but Friday night I caught one that pushed the mark.  It was a bit dark so back he went.  I lost at least as many fish.   I did weight a 25.1# fish in the derby, which was holding 3rd until late Sunday.

The WA contingent of NWKA represented well with about 10-12 members making the trip.  There were ~40 participants actively fishing the derby, making this the biggest derby we've had so far up in the NW.  Amazing place up there, well worth the 11 hour journey.  I'll be back next year.

And actually, I think she caught the winner one of those lures you left for her.  Those 2 fished hard.  They were out there all day from first light to lines out, only going back to shore to catch a bite to eat and pick up their kids for the afternoon sessions.  Matthew, her husband, caught a 30+ pounder on Friday that took 4 hours to land!!!

Wow!! Now that looks like a blast. Last year I took a boat all the way from Seattle to Seward Ak. and only got to fish for 15 minutes  :smt013 it killed me to look at scenes like that for two weeks and not fish. I saw place after place that would be perfect for a kayak. This tourny looks well worth the road trip. Is it held same time every year, and are others welcome to join? I've been dreaming of a road trip with the yaks up there. Jonesz's Jones'in!!! Wat to go!!

It's held every Labor Day weekend and is open to all.  This derby benefits the Conuma River hatchery which is where all these kings come from.  They were expecting 50K fish to return this year!!

Some more random pics.

Many of the fish were dark, but made for great CNR.  Still, we managed to get enough bright ones for the cooler.
