Got the day off for Thursday to try for rockfish and lings in Santa Cruz. Forecast looks good. The forecast for Friday looks even better, but I had to have my day off request in by last week and Thursday looked best at the time. Frozen squid and gulp swimming mullets are on the menu.

Planning to pedal straight out to the reefs at/past the lighthouse with a possible quick stop for one or two kingfish or other good-size bait for lings if it looks like I pass over a school of 'em on the way. Will work the reefs all morning and hope for a noon breeze to assist the ride back to the harbor, which might include some trying for halibut in the sandy-bottomed interim.

It'll be a launch out of the harbor by the party boats at first light for me (5:30), and it would be nice to encounter some other yakos out there.

My fantasy is to go out on Thursday, rest Friday, and go out again Saturday. It’ll take a wife diplomacy miracle though as well as the cooperation of my various aches and pains.

Here’s my 5/11 report…

Packed up last night in twilight conditions. Woke up at 4:00am and had a hard time getting out of bed. The forecast had deteriorated slightly (whitecaps by 11:00am instead of noon), but other than that, it looked good. Finally got on the road at 4:40. The plan was to launch at first light, 5:33am. Got to the SC harbor and a couple of boats were launching and there were a couple of trailers in the parking lot. It was COLD, like 40 degrees cold with a very slight breeze.

I got (almost) everything ready to launch. The last thing in my setup routine is fishing poles, and when I looked for them, they were nowhere to be seen. Of course, I’d left them at home, which has never happened before. I considered leaving my AI and making a dash for home to get my fishing rods—figured I could still be on the water by 6:30. But the harbor was now deserted, and so I just packed up and left.

Other than the cold, conditions woulda been awesome—very little swell, light breeze, etc. Oh well, gonna try my luck this weekend…

Is this the longest non-fishing report ever?

Shoot, man. Details. You should probably just fish on Thursday too but with fishing poles this time. Seeming like there’s gonna be plenty of room to operate tomorrow. Gonna double check that everything is packed…

Well, nice drive report!  :smt044  Pricey, but if the conditions were good I would have dropped the coin to Bayside and get a new setup.

Fishing with fishing poles? I'm going to have to try that next time...

Can't go tomorrow, but might be able to reschedule a Friday meeting to open up that day...

Wish I could change to Friday for the pond-like conditions in the forecast but it’s not to be. Started negotiations for a Saturday trip as well
