Not surprised at Hobie.  But I'm wondering what dealer you purchased from and why they wouldn't help you with this process.

Billy at Windtoys helped me the entire way, as well as previously with drive issues. I have complete confidence in that shop, and Billy. Highly recommended in fact!

Right on, glad they were helpful at least!  I'll make it a point to visit next time in the area

I hope this is an isolated issue.  Unlike the drive well cracking issue my first 2004 OB then 2006 OB hulls suffered from.  The 2008 OB hull (3rd) was redesigned and Never had cracking issues. I hope Hobie resolved this for you.

Welp, fuck me. Cracked in the same exact place. The weld that was put in place did not hold. I mean,...who really wants to fish in spring? Usually sucks right? ALL of my spring plans this year have been dashed. Fuck me.

I've already contacted my shop and said I need a new hull now. No more welds. No more back and forth over bunks or transport methods. 3 year warranty. Give me a new motherfucking hull. I still really dig the shop, but I'm quite soured on Hobie.

I will say this,...I'm done with Hobie. IF I get another yak, it will not be a Hobie. Between the drive and the hull, I just don't feel that these boats were made for people who's primary interest is fishing, not fiddling' with their boats with the latest snappy marine mats or crazy amounts of attachable aftermarket gear. I had thought these boats were built with toughness in mind ($$$$ y'no???), given the beating the boat will take with just average use. I didn't think I'd need a backup boat to spread the fishing stress between, but that's what it seems like at the moment.

I'm mad. I'm off the water until this gets resolved, and that really sucks for my mental health. Sorry for the rant.

I'll update this thread later on if anything happens.

No apologies necessary!  Your frustration is completely valid!  Thanks for the updates and I hope this gets resolved quick so you can get back on the water.

My advice anyone buying a new Hobie is get "replacement" warranty in wiriting from the retailer.  How many threads of Hobie cracks?  tons.  How many threads on other brands cracked?  Not many.

Great boats for many.  Nightmares for too many.

+1

You ought to introduce Hobie to NCKA and this thread. Maybe they'll come to their senses and realize that they are losing a significant number of sales.
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

I think you are being too harsh. I’ve owned three Hobies, and only three of them have developed cracks.   :smt001

That really sucks. I’m sorry.

Is it below the waterline? If so, I thought Hobie had a policy of not trying to weld there. If it is above the waterline you could just squirt some goop on it and fish it until they sort it out.

I got pretty good at plastic welding and successfully replaced a failed drive well repair, but the potential consequences for failure below the waterline are bad enough that doesn’t make sense to recommend it.

Also, a cheap basic paddle kayak could be a good backup option.

The crack is right below the right side cup holder,..so above waterline and within the interior of the yak. The official recommendation was a weld, which was completed, and unfortunately failed immediately. Went out for a spin at a local lake, chillin, happy times. Back at the ramp looked over a few other modifications I had made (Snipe seat rise, new rudder,...), and spotted the new crack at the same location. Unfortunately now that same spot is double weak. The hull is ruined as far as I'm concerned. I'm not fishing with this boat no more. I'm not about to trust a broken yak when I mostly go out solo. I'm all for tinkering,...but not to fix someone else's fuck up. Gimme a new one,...I paid for it dammit.

I expect better than what I've got so far. I've fished the hell outta this boat, but a 3 year warranty is a 3 year warranty,...part of why I bought the thing in the first place. Buy a Hobie, it's the best, with a 3 year warranty and everything. Can it be patched and fixed, sure. But this is not what I paid for nor what I expect from a top name in the industry. If it were years old, sure,...but sheet,...c'mon Hobie.

I'm annoyed I have to deal with all this,...stand by a warranty or fuck the hell off, for that price!

</rant over,...for now,...stay tuned for more fun times! I've had a few tonight and edited a buncha foul language,...I'm hella annoyed by Hobie at the moment.>

Found this crack in mine after a Shelter Cove trip.
Only had her for 18 months.
I received a new outback in less than a month from filling a claim.
Wasn’t grilled  on anything. Kayak city just wanted to see my Receipt
And yes I registered it with hobie after I got home.
Had to travel from Reno to Sacramento to get it,was the only negative other than finding that crack after bailing about 2 gallons of water out at the Cove.
I kept my old prowler for crabbing, diving, and floating rivers.
The outback for trolling and most all ocean trips.
After breaking a cable at Little River I’ve been bringing old yellow along for a backup.
Before I purchased my outback I demoed other pedal drive kayaks, and find the hobie to be more enjoyable to fish with than the others.
Best of luck to everyone and let’s hope hobie strengthens there materials to prevent this from happening in newer models.
