Deal on SPJ Rod

EDIT: Initial impressions. Between yard work, freshwater fishing, and defending humanity from the Witch Queen I received my Goofish rod. I went with an acid wrapped (spiral wrapped) pe 2-4 rod in black. It was nicely packaged and came in a nice rod protector sleeve that I plan on reusing.

In retrospect acid wrapped is probably not for me. It makes the rod a little more difficult to store and transport. Oh well.

Initial build quality seems overall good. I didn’t see anything to gripe about. Usually I would look for guide alignment, but hey, acid wrapped.

I benchmarked the rod against my trusty trevala s tvsc63m which is similar in rating. The shimano I seems ever so slightly lighter, but it is 3 inches shorter. The balance point on the 2 are very similar. The grip length and reel placement are very similar. I prefer the rear grip on the shimano, and the front grip on the goofish.

Action wise I threw my tern 300 on both and attached it to a 10lb dumbbell. The goofish bends all the way to the front grip, the shimano had a few extra inches left before the front grip.

No comment yet on sensitivity or actual fishyness, but I’m very excited to start fishing it!

I have a few SPJ rods. Most of them are JDM (Tailwalk etc) but I do have a goofish rod (blue one). Seems to be a solid rod and I've caught a few fish on it.

Is slow pitch jigging something you do only if it's deep, or does it work in shallow water as well?

I ordered one too just got it today, liked the case it comes with. Thanks for the info what’s the advantage of slow pitch rod. I’ve always used trevala rod so curious to know the advantage.

I am no expert, but basically the idea of a slow pitch jig is that it is designed in such a way to fall slowly and stay in the zone for a longer period of time. The rod is matched to the jig and helps impart action into the jig. The jig does best falling on a slack line. When you lift the rod it loads up and snaps the jig up. The jig will then fall on a slack line which it is designed for.

Random internet search “ A slow-pitch jig is a center-weighted, keeled jig designed to flutter, dart, spiral, vibrate, or glide as it falls on a fully slack line. With a slight bit of resistance, like that applied with the thumb as the jig makes its initial descent, the jig will fall straight down, with its nose pointed toward the surface. In free-fall, a slow pitch jig kicks horizontally, falling in a way that imitates a wounded or dying baitfish.”

The rods tend to be light, which is fun for the kayak. The line used is usually lighter (I’m using 30lb braid) which is nice for a kayak as well.

It’s just another way to skin a cat really. You can use the rods with other gear, and the jigs with other rods.
