Ran across a FHS Production video where Cal described using shrimp to catch trout.  I swear I have never heard of this, so wondering if anyone actually does this and how successful it's been.  I did once try squid, but didn't catch anything after one try so gave up. Is it good for something like steelhead fishing since they have a chance of eating shrimp?

I know people who've caught steelhead on shrimp.

Sand shrimp even more-so.

Can confirm steel head eat shrimp.

Cheap salad shrimp! I also throw it in my bags of UV cured roe and they turn bright pink and really soak in the cure well. Worked on coastal cutties and steelhead, in slow water. Fish it like a marshmallow just plunking or on a slow drift, Ive even used it in some frog water w/ a water bobber for a really stealthy presentation when I can sight fish steelhead and don't want to spook them.

Can confirm that salad shrimp works.  Caught plenty of steelhead and salmon in New Zealand with these.

OK sounds like it's a common thing for steelhead.  I guess it could work for trout too, but I think I'll stick with power bait and worms.

Shrimp and Marshmallow Cocktail used to be pretty popular for put and take lakes. I think you can buy shrimp flavored marshmallows or scent for trout.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

I'll often tip my jigs with a thumbnail-sized chunk of raw prawn when fishing for steelhead, and it works great. Chinook, coho, and coastal cutthroat trout also gobble up the jig-shrimp combo. I have no doubt in my mind that shrimp would work for resident rainbows.

Mickfish mentioned the shrimp+marshmallow setup. I would also include the nightcrawler+marshmallow combo in your bait lineup. The old worm+mallow combo is an old staple among shore anglers around Lake Almanor, namely because it often tempts those wild/holdover fish that wouldn't often go for Powerbait. Totally worth a shot if you're looking for the trout that've been in the lake for a while.

Trout can be extremely picky one day and completely stupid the next. I've caught trout on Cheez Whiz, Raw Bacon and even a cigarette butt once.  If the trout are in a feeding mode, Shrimp will work.

I rigged up my nephew's pole with shrimp on a carolina rig and he hooked into a couple of trout at camanche this past January.  Haven't gone trout fishing since but I'd imagine if it works for stockers at one lake it should work for stockers everywhere else too.

If I attached the video correctly it shows a guy using salad shrimp for trout around the 2:30 mark.

There are some rivers (spring creeks and tailwaters) and ponds/lakes that have mysis shrimp and/or scuds. I tie scud patterns when fly fishing Lake Davis, Lake Almanor and some high elevation alkaline ponds in the Eastern Sierras. Not sure if market shrimp would work, but I can definitely attest to fly patterns that resemble these critters. I think wild trout are much more visual predators than we give them credit for, else flyfishing wouldn't be effective.
