A very sad story.  I feel for his family.
When I was around that age I did all kinds of crazy shit that somehow I survived from.  Probably most of us did.  At 21 you are adventurous and largely unhindered by the consequences.

I was going to say this too. I used to do a lot of stupid things, and I look back every once and a while and think "Wow- how did I get away with doing X Y or Z? I'm much better now" but it's always relative, right? I still am not living risk-free, but perhaps I won't be launching fireworks from moving vehicles at other moving vehicles on the playa anymore.

Tragic. Brings back memories of two dear friends lost when their board was swamped as they were coming into shore. Be safe out there and check the weather sites before venturing out. I use -

So far it has been spot-on and I have felt safe.

I also did some reckless things back in the day.  If you are attracted to ocean kayak fishing, chances are that you've done plenty to put yourself needlessly in harms way especially in your youth.  I don't remember ever doing so as part of an otherwise well thought out elaborate plan involving my friends and family.  In my case it was almost always "hey, hold my beer for a sec" type of stuff.  Maybe my personal experience isn't particularly informative.

I started ocean-kayak fishing around this age, but as brave and stupid as we might have been, we never went out without PFDs or wetsuits.

I just looked up Flatiron Rock and it sure is exposed to the north swell. There are lots of rocks that appear to be in the lee of Trinidad Head that would have been far safer to approach in 9ft swells.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

Really sad..
I had a 21 year old friend who went hiking in a desert canyon, in the middle of nowhere, all by himself.
He fell from pretty high and lost conscious. If this was the ocean, he would have been RIP.
Luckily, two hikers that visited the canyon that day found him. He was rescued by helicopter and survived.
There’s a very thin line between adventure and tragedy.

Amen. brother
