Though I grew up using spinning reels, I've made a pretty solid conversion to level-wind setups.  They just seem better for jigging deep and trolling and so on, which are things I'm doing more these days.  My current favorite is a Shimano Tekota with a line counter.

Still, for shore casting and such, a spinning reel is nice to have.  Last year I had a good solid Shimano reel and one spool for mono, one for braid, but I gave it away to some Mexicans who helped me out of a seriously mud-mired truck.  Damned if I can remember the type, but as far as I can tell Shimano no longer makes it.

And now, I'm flat-out amazed at how hard it is to find a decent, fairly heavy-duty spinning reel with a spare spool.  I have searched and shopped online a couple times, and I just get worn out after 20 minutes of that and give up!  Does anyone have a recommendation?  I'd really love two spools, on a rig appropriate for heavier lines like 20 pound mono and braid for saltwater use.

Unfortunately, not many reels come with extra spools anymore. Take a look at the Daiwa BG series. $90-120. Extra spools $40. These are great inexpensive saltwater reels! I have been using a 2500, 4000 and a 5000 for years now. Just rinse them off really well after saltwater use and they will last forever!
All my reels are spooled with braid. If I feel the need to use mono, I just add a topshot over the braid.

I will second the Daiwa BGs. I've been using a 2500, 3500 and 4k for a couple season and they've been solid, they're just not sealed. Best reel in class imho. User servicable, no magseal to deal with

Good tips, thanks!  If the Daiwa reel will hold up a while and not cost too much, that's perfect.  And you can indeed find spools on eBay for 40-45.

I do recall my Shimano Stradic coming with two spools, but I guess they no longer do that.  Some reading on high end reels like the Abu Garcia Revo MGX comes with a spare shallow spool, so less capacity, but extra.  I bought a couple cheaper Kastking reels on Amazon this year and they probably wont last long, but at less than 50$ they are fairly good quality, and cheap.  https://www.amazon.com/KastKing-Zephyr-Spinning-Reel-Fishing/dp/B08BLHBJYM/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=kastking%2Bspinning%2Breel&qid=1637773291&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-5&th=1

I checked out those Kastking options!  Some of the reviews weren't too great.  Curious to hear how they hold up for you.

I do have a light Stradic that I got a few years back for freshwater, complete with extra spool.  That's a great reel.
