I'm so glad there are people like you, and the others who helped, who take the duty to assist seriously.  Thank you!
I was the first on the scene to a couple of rescues last year within about month (I started to wonder why do people try to kill themselves when they're around me?!), one off the cliffs, one a kayaker , and the lesson I learned is that it's what happens after you start to help that really complicates things - I could grab the hand of guy clinging to the cliff, but he was bigger than me, and I couldn't move him,  the guy in the kayak seemed dazed and couldn't understand instructions that would save him, and he and his barge of a kayak also were too big for me to tow or lift.  Luckily, in both cases other help was nearby and both guys were o.k..

Wow, what a report!  Good on you and the rest of the people that helped rescue that guy.  Congrats on a limit as well!

Wow John, what a dramatic opener! The dude is fortunate you had the right instincts and preparedness to step in. I bet the crab tastes that much sweeter now!

You know, most of us have our hulls jammed with pool noodles.  If you dont want to throw your PFD for rescue, why not just dig out a few pool noodles?

This is a great idea.  I thought about the comparison to the carriage requirements for larger vessels.  They're required to carry a Type IV throwable PFD for exactly these sorts of emergencies.  A Type IV provides at least 16.5 lbs of buoyancy.  According to the Internets (and nothing is wrong on the Internet, right?), a pool noodle provides about 2 lbs of buoyancy per foot.  If we accept that requirement as gospel (and also for comparison's sake), then 2 5' noodles would provide similar buoyancy to an approved Type IV PFD.  I've never heard of someone only stuffing just one pool noodle in their hull, so this sounds like a great option if you already stuff noodles in your hull.

That’s a darn good idea!! Clearly I wasn’t able to come up with that in the fly, but am going to store that idea in the back of my mind.
