Hi everyone, I live in the East Bay, new to salt water kayak fishing and planning to try crabbing from the kayak this year as well. I've had a Hobie Revo 11 for quite some time and fished on lakes a few times (not as much as I would have liked to) mainly for large mouth bass, but only went out in salt water once so far in HMB at the tournament organized by Monterey Kayak this year, which was a lot of fun. The posts in the Safety forum have been a great help to prepare for the bay, I am now the proud owner of a vhf radio, wetsuit, a little foldable knife, I already had gps on my fish finder.

Caught on my first trip 5 rock fish, one octopus, one lingcod, all on bass tubes (I figured they look a bit like a small squid), and cannot wait to go back fishing in the bay again.

I already had gps on my fish finder.

What about when your battery dies or the unit unexpectedly dies?  Redundancy in navigation tools is a big deal.  Being in thick fog without compass or GPS can be deadly - even in the bay.

Welcome and hello from Berkeley! Understanding currents and wind patterns in each spot in the bay is also a critical safety skill. Keep going!
