The number one reason for kayak fatal accidents is drowning due to hypothermia. The article says search was suspended due to strong winds, and the man was wearing a Hawaiian shirt and shorts. Doesn’t sound good. I hope he’s ok

For those of you who have not been, Clear Lake can be a MONSTER in windy conditions.

Just my opinion but the wind can make just about any body of water dangerous.
I have been on San Luis in a 14' skiff so rough didn't know if we could get back to launch ramp.
When in doubt BEACH IT might save your life none of this equipment is worth your life.

17' ski barge from the slough to the launch ramp at the park in clear lake was so bad with 2 people in it i had to  go lay in the front to keep it from being blown over backwards in the waves and wind The  worst conditions I have seen anywhere  in SF bay or any lake in California. It is the shallow water in the narrows anfd the extremly windy conditions that cause this.

I fished a bass tournament in my old boat and went through 4' high waves.  And that wasn't in the narrows, we didn't go near the narrows, way to big.
So long and thanks for all the fish!!!

So sad. I always carry two coiled metal lanyards, 75lb strength, connected to each other, and big carabiners at each end.
When the wind becomes dangerous, I connect the plastic loop at the back of my PFD to one of the kayak’s bungee cord behind me.
It works really well. Doesn’t get in the way, things don’t get stuck in it, I feel safer, and if I land with the cord connected (happened once when I forgot) there’s ample length in the system for freedom. If I ever have to disconnect myself in an emergency, it can be done with the big carabiners or cutting the bungee

The only time I ever really thought I might die on the water was on Clear Lake.
