Very interesting.

At the end, they say, "We now know that apart from using metal for the hooks and nylon for the line, modern fishing invented nothing." If that's the case, I'd like to see that 13,000 year old downrigger...

Hey NWM, thinking of your "downrigger" comment...

An old technique still embraced by Hawaiians is called "Palu Bag"
There's other terms for it that escape me
Basically a weighted sack of chum and a baited hook, tied/wrapped in a fashion that the fisher can give a quick strong pull, untie the cordage and release the contents at the depth desired

Not a Downrigger, but depth control nonetheless
