My apologies, I'm pretty new to the board and I'm not certain this is the correct place, but does "hookups" mean hooking up with others to fish? I did see a few (older) posts in this forum trying to arrange trips.

I was thinking of going to Timber Cove tomorrow, but am uncertain if the conditions are sound for an a morning trip (say around 8am). Windy.com seems to indicate 4ft swells at 7 seconds, and very low wind (if I'm reading correctly).

I'm fairly new to ocean kayaking. I've done guided trips out of Monterey and Ocean Cove, the latter I did only about a month ago with 5.5 foot swells (can't recall the period) and 10mph winds with decent gusts. The guide told me it was a bit rougher than he'd like for someone new to the area but I did totally fine, never felt even remotely close to tipping over.

On the safety front, I've got a vhf radio, wetsuit, pdf, and I've practiced self-rescue drills in the water already. I've taken my yak out (Old Town 120 PDL) many times in SF bay (mostly in Benicia where I live), often in increasingly high winds to the point of small whitecaps forming, just to see how I handle the chop, and again have had no real issues. Earlier today I was in Sausalito area which had 12mph winds, gusts at 22mph, and I seemed to do fine heading out halfway towards Angel Island.

Anyhow... I know it's pretty short notice bit it would be cool if anyone had plans to hit TC tomorrow (or if anyone wants to give me advice on whether current conditions look okay for someone who is not looking to venture very far out at all at TC.... I plan on taking it easy and just staying in the cove itself if possible to get some rockfish)

You sound equipped experienced ish, I’m betting there will be yakkers there.  If you sense a no go intuition once you get there no shame in bailing other than wasting your attempt.  Not a waste to compare windy with actual eyes in the water decision making.  Geetum brah!  Your hookup title is appropriate. :smt006

Thanks folks! Definitely going to take it easy and not risk it if it looks dicey.

My Old Town PDL is green, blue life jacket - will keep an eye out!

Hey hey! Aw man, I should have tried hitting you up via vhf radio. I'm still pretty newbish about it. I used it on channel 69 when I got there to ask if any NCKA folks were around and ask if I was okay parking down in the cove, and another fellow responded (I don't think it was you?) Or maybe it was?

I did totally fine in terms of handling the conditions, swell didn't bother me at all... and the cove is protected enough that launch was pretty easy (my first "beach" launch really). I still need to practice more though. The drive up/down is a bit sketch but my fat butt probably couldn't lug my yak up and down on a cart so I'm glad driving down was an option lol!

As far as fish goes, came home with 5, three of those were pretty decent size, and I'm pretty happy with that! Lots of jellies and kelp to deal with... so I'm not really sure how much to trust fishfinder except for reading depth and bottom contour (which is still really useful!)

I feel like all the fish I caught weren't really visible on the fishfinder, so it really was a bit of a guessing game and just jigging the rockfish flies off the bottom and trying to differentiate between bites and normal dragging of the weight.

Thanks for asking, how did you do out there? Were you with the 2-man group or the 3-person group? (I'm guessing the latter.... I should have come and said hi I suppose but my newb self sortof wanted to steer clear and not bother people in case they thought I was muscling in on their spot, I don't know proper protocol for that sort of thing lol)

Oh, only real downside of the trip.... I seem to have left my paddle sitting on the ground there. Didn't realize until I got home.  :(

I saw the paddle but my mama taught me not to steal. Next time you go out to timber put a post up. More then likely I’ll meet up.
