Of course.

Might be a little chilly if it's a 1 piece, but if it's a 2 piece it's pretty much the standard for up here.  Remember that the suit crushes at depth and has only half the insulating ability at 30ft, and 1/3 at 60.
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.

Hey Primo...glad you took the plunge.

I just got back a few minutes ago from a pool session with David Laird over at Wallins Dive Center.  Very much worth the price of admission.

David's a great instructor who knows his stuff and really knows how to make you feel at ease.

The way he relates what he's trying to teach to spearing/abdiving really makes it easy to understand the how's and the why's.  Now that I've been there, I would recommend his class to anyone who is looking to start diving.  I signed myself up for another class he's having on 9/23 but I think I'm ready to try an ocean dive.

Send me info on the wetsuit you decided to buy, I'm going to have to buy one soon too.

Thanks for the link Mooch.

I have a couple more questions to add to the mix:
1) For someone like me who's carrying around a little extra stuff, would it be better to buy off the shelf or to have  a wetsuit custom made?
2) What are the advantages of 1 piece vs. 2 piece and vice versa?
3) Does color matter all that much for spear fishing?  I've seen a lot of guys go with the camo.  If color does matter, is it alright to go with a normal black wetsuit and then buy one of those covers that you can wear over the wetsuit?

Mooch, you are absolutely the man with connections.  One of my "go to" guys.

When are you planning on going out for a dive?

When I get my suit (in about a week or so), I'll pick-up some fins and a weight belt and I'll most likely swim around lovers point in Monterey just to get the feel of being in the water again. I'll try to convice Pat /Sea Breeze to join me since she swims that area too. I'll post it in da hook-up section. :smt002

I might consider taking a class with D. Laird or maybe just take Fuzz to L&L for some Hawaiian grub in exchange for some tips.

1) Try the shelf first and see if that works. I would recommend something in a hyperstretch if your weigh will fluctuate a bit. That way one suit will take care of you.

2) Personally I think a 2 piece is easier to put on and take off. A 2 piece will give you more core insulation. A 2 piece has more versatile applications. I have worn just the top water skiing. I have worn just the bottoms kayaking.

3) I couldn't answer that one at all. I bet if you put the best spear fisherman in the worst color and the worst spear fisherman in the best color the guy wearing the worst color would outfish the guy wearing the best color.

Angel,

1.  Not sure about custom vs off the shelf.  For me, off the shelf works fine.

2.  I believe most norcal divers use a 2 piece, 7MM.  I would recommend an open cell type suite, with a built in hood.  Open cell has smooth neoprene inside, which requires a lube to slide into it.  Lube = hair conditioner mixed with water.
In the past, I've used scuba wetsuits and there is a WORLD of difference, compared to an open cell suit.

3.  For Norcal, I doubt color or camo makes a difference.  But that's just my opinion.

BTW, 2 common freediving suits brands are:
Apnea USA
Picasso

I have a picasso, but noticed that Apnea USA suits have been very popular lately.  Moderately priced and supposedly a good product.  But like a pair of shoes, it all depends which one fits you the best.

Thanks for the info fellas.

After I've done a couple of saltwater dives I'll be looking for hookups if you guys don't mind a self reliant beginner hanging around.  :smt003

Can't wait to get wet  :snorkel Looking forward to learning something new again  :smt002 I've been dedicated to kayak fishing for about 7 years now and it's about time I get back in tune with other things. I need to start paying some attention to my dear old mountain bike, my snowboard and my trusty old back pack  :smt002 I'd like to get back into playing beach volleyball tournaments again but my speedos no longer fit  :smt003 and my vertical leap is as high as a credit card....laying flat  :smt011
