The rock fishing too up and down the coast seems much better to me than in the early 2000s, and the science backs that up with many species having recovered much faster than expected after additional regs and MPAs were introduced.  I took a long break from fishing from then until fairly recently, and I fell like the difference is apparent.  Some heavily pressured spots may be exceptions, but writ large many / most ground fish are in better shape than 20 years ago, both based on my minor individual experience and some of the science I've read.

If 30 PB's and 20 kayakers have fished a spot in the ocean, can you really call it your spot.  I wish they would have said show the fish in his cooler.  I don't think he had any yet.  He looked like he was just going to start fishing.

Anytime someone resorts to name calling and claiming public property is their own, their credibility and issue of concern are forfeited.

On the other side - One problem I have is with people that only fish when there is a "bite" exposed.   I like people who fish locations based on conditions and fish regularly and find the hot bites.  In the past, Youtubers, bloggers and forum posters would at least wait a week or two before posting a tip or about something exciting.  By then, conditions would change like moon phase, tide movement and water clarity.  So when bite chasers (whether kayakers or PB's) would go out and not catch anything or the bite has slowed down, we won't see them for a while.  Then, the fishermen/women who go out every weekend no matter what are not impacted.

I fish, therefore I am.

I think the comments about Youtuber spot blowing is probably spot on, I just haven't been watching these videos for long, but I can spot landmarks I've seen and figure things out.  But they literally did what all other boaters do, saw someone hooking up on fish, made a move.  That video didn't burn any spots, but I can tell it's a common thing with these guys from all the comments on it.  I had some boaters screw with me just because I was in a kayak and in "their spot" with about 50 other boaters, and I always kept my distance, I never crossed a line, and drifted with the pack and would reel up if a fish was on near me.  I had a guy follow me with his boat once, that was pretty messed up.  I got into yelling matches with some, I know someone has video of it out there somewhere.  Haters are going to hate, and when your a minority and they hate on you, they deserve whatever they get IMHO.  If they wanted to get them to change, they took the wrong approach.  Hell, once a few of us were paddling back into the harbor and a boater cut right between two of us throwing a big wake.  They later claimed they had engine trouble when we caught up with them, pretty sure they did it on purpose though.

I know anglers that watch these and other videos are looking for spot identifying marks. THEY reach out to others for confirmation and THEY blow up the spot.  THEY spread the word.  I think if anyone recognizes a spot from on the water, means they have fished the area themselves and have just as much right to the PUBLIC OCEAN spot as others.
I fish, therefore I am.

Nick is awesome. When he stood up for die hard when that boat ran him over u could tell he doesn't take any shit.

I've always felt like one thing fishing had going for it is that fishing localism, while kinda present, was way more mellow than surf localism.  Sad to see that's maybe changing...  I guess any limited resource can fall victim to that, and the frustration is understandable, but you hate to see it.

!00% these guys are surfers lol, Localism is a think of young adults we have all been there, pretty funny.

If Nick ever starts his Kayak guiding trips sign me the fuck up.

I watched from the 2:00 mark to the 3:00 minute mark and it was about 58 seconds too long.
What kills me is you were close enough to yank him in the water and you didn't.  :dontknow:

Watched the first 5 minutes...those dudes in the boat went about it all wrong calling him names...BUT I think some of us reasonable people share their frustration.  Whether it was the Bolinas thread or some other spot burning thread, these dudes just simply learn these spots from other people then straight up burn it.  For most people before youtube, you'd have to do some serious googlemap searches or know some people before learning about specific launches.  It doesn't mean it was a secret spot, but just kept on the low for a good reason.  Then you got this new generation of youtube "anglers" that got their shit all backwards.

We're not asking you to stop making youtube content, just stop burning spots. Make similar fishing videos you are now minus all the spot burning and the whole world won't hate you.  It is possible to fish locations and not burn the shit out of it on your youtube videos....it really is.

The localism is embarrassing. It's an old ocean that's been around at least as long as any fisherman and it's not a secret. Also, the dudes on the powerboat are really just kids and they learned to be like that from others. I'm certain they've heard salty old bastards complain about spots and Youtubers and are regurgitating it in their artless way. Regardless of what anybody thinks about the Youtubers, and my own feelings can be mixed, confronting them on the water in a yelling match is stupid whether you are old or young or a dumbass or a genius.

My best spot is far from secret. The coordinates can be had by anyone who does a little fishing and rummaging online and finding out, but somehow I frequently manage to find myself enjoying it for good stretches of time either totally alone or alongside people who aren't quite in the right place. If you have a glory spot that you want to hit, get up earlier and get your act together and haul ass out there before anyone else. Otherwise, prepare to pleasantly enjoy the company of others who enjoy fishing and the outdoors just like you. Easy.
