A nice young eucalyptus sapling would be better shape it where you want it however you want it and then let it age out in the sun for 2 or 3 weeks then you can stain it or oil it

You're right, eucalyptus is the way to go. That might have to wait until winter though, as right now, PVC is my lucky handle material...

Home Depot or Lowes carries bamboo garden stakes.  You can cull through and find a decent diameter/straight one.

If near SF, I found really nice thick walled bamboo at Soko Hardware in Japantown.  I've built poke poles with it that have lasted years and repurposed one to built my gaff. Ted's right about checking them, also look out for cracks in them.
