Hmm...New School Power Supply plus other install issues vs.

http://kayakfishingstuff.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=fishfinderkit&Category_Code=batteries

Is this kit the efficient (cost and effort) solution it appears to be??  Soldering is NOT my thing...

1) You'll still have to make a connection between the 9V style battery connector wire, and your FF power wire. The best way to do that is with solder/heatshrink tubing/liquid electrical tape.
2) I recently purchased 8 2500mAH AA batteries at Frys, with a 4 battery charger that works at home and in the car, for $30. An additional charger would run about $15 or so.
3) Loc-n-loc containers are about $5
4) An 8 battery holder and connector cost about $4 at Fry's
4) Rubber stoppers and foam are worth about $2

The KFS folks have lots of success using 8 AA NiMH batteries. Folks over here are set on using 10 AA batteries. Since the KFS kit includes an 8 battery charger that will run off of 12V, topping off your batteries in the car on the way to the put-in is a slam dunk. In my opinion, this would most likely result in your never having power problems on the water.

Regards,
Scott

Scott, that was the breakdown I was curious about - thanks.  It seems to me this is the way to go...Eliminates a lot of the guesswork/decisions about each piece of the puzzle!

Sean, I'm not a COMPLETE LAMO when it comes to things mechanical  :smt003  (I did manage to negotiate the glue gun remedy to my X Factor leak you recommended.)  Drills, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc. I am comfortable with...Never soldered anything before though.

Soldering is as simple as a glue gun, and far easier than untangling a braid backlash. I say go for it!

Soldering is easy once someone shows you the right way.  Make sure you seal all of your connects to keep corrosion at bay.

This is my New School set up, I have had several different ones but this one seems the best. The over all size is 4" x 3-1/8" x 1-1/2"
My total cost was $48.51

$20    Batteries (20-2200 Mah @ Fry's) 10 for second set if the first go dead.
$16    Panasonic Battery charger (Fry's)
$4      Battery Holders ( 8 cell & a 2 cell @ Fry's)
$1.66  Loc-n-loc Container (Wallmart 3 pack for $5)
$1      Wire and connectors
$.35    Rubber grommets (Ace hardware) (Applied w/ a dab of marine goop)
$3      Trailer style outside waterproof connection (Autozone)
$2.50  Waterproof In-line fuse Holder (W/ new blade style fuse)(Autozone)

I mounted the in-line fuse holder with Velcro to the top of the inside of the kayak on the side by my flush mount rod holder. That way its out of the way and up high away from any water. I attach the battery container in the same location. Its attached with a strap to the scupper tube and sits snug up against the front flush mount rod holder. I haven't had a problem at all with it moving or being in the way of anything.
Very easy to make, light and definitely small.  And don't forget the dialectic grease on every connection.
