         We were out around 3 oclock. The two yaks I saw, one yellow SOT, one blue SIK.  And just as we were getting out of the water saw two guys in a tandem set for fishing launch off the south end of linda mar. Just drove by 5 minutes ago, baitfish and birds still going haywire out there-also off rockaway. Must be at least 20 surf fisherman as well. I plan on getting out there around 230 today and see what happens.

Yup, I saw the same group of surf fishermen working the North side of Linda Mar yesterday at around 6PM - I did not see anyone working Rockaway beach....which was sort of strange.

I'm getting my surf rod all polished-up for an all nighter trip at Rockaway - possibly on a Friday night, I'll try to get Jason / jselli and Joe / Skyboy to come out and party  Your more than welcome to join us!

Hey Brian, how about an I.D. on the shark...

Without seeing the rest of the shark, I really can't tell.  I'm with Dustin "Rockhopper" on this one.. probably a soupfin or spiny dogfish, but I'm leaning towards soupfin.

Oh, and Joel,  I still say you didn't catch that fish on a "chin spin", you caught it on a "white rubber worm attached to a chin spin".  Oh, and good job on the net and use of artificial bait, I'll add the credit towards your "bsteves approval factor".

Brian, this particular shark did not have a spine behind the dorsal fin - does this rule out spiny dogfish?

Yep, no spine... probably not a spiny dogfish.  That makes it even more likely that it was a soupfin.

Plus it's a little darker than the average spiny dogfish, and the eyes aren't as green.

I believe it is a soupfin...easily confused with brown smoothounds aka "sand sharks". The easiest way for me to tell the two apart is that the soupfin's rear dorsal(?) fin is almost directly above and in line with it's anal fin. The Smoothound's anal fin is smaller than its rear dorsal fin and is farther back towards the tail.

That and the soupfin has "real" teeth as opposed to the sandpaper like teeth of the smoothound and leopard shark.

Sweet hook Mooch!  I know you were pumped, til you saw that it wasn't your target.
Dude!  I'm down for night tossin when it happens....don't forget,I can get us into one of those Ocean Beach nite-surf-gangs (they're pinoys from my local bait shop) and they go when it's ON! and they don't get into all that gang stuff, they just go in numbers so that the "other" tough guys won't get crazy with them. Come on!  nothing to be affraid of!  there biggest last year was about 30lbs.(i saw it).
Either way?  count me in!     

Yeah, I'd like to get back into the "roots" of my fishing days....especially now that it's hard to get out with all this crappy conditions that we've been getting. Surf fishing is almost as good as kayak fishing - especially when there's a bon fire going, comfy chairs and blankets...throw in a few shrimp on the barbie.....perhaps some smirnoff ice in the cooler.....Ben playing some cool tunes on his guitar ......Bob and his famous HMB Chili cooking on the side.....and if we're lucky enough, JTF and hook us up with some cool chicks who don't mind hanging out with stinky ol' fishermen

haha, mooch, want some chicks to come chill?  then you must bring your bbq grill and lots of firewood for the bonfire, dont forget the extra large boom box with kickin beats, none of that top 40 sentimental love lorn crap they play on the radio either....  and ya gots to go in shifts to throw your lures... if you leave the girls by the fire with no attention they'll start to get bored....... yep.....  best to just leave your fishrods in the truck...  oh, but also, girls like to fish too, but i'm not sure throwin lures in the dark is too safe for first timers.
