I mentioned in another thread that I'd made a gaff that I like for less than $20, so here are the details...

I bought this "Offshore Angler 3-1/2" Hand Hook" for $13.99 at Bass Pro:

https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/offshore-angler-3-1-2-handy-hook

The hook on it is pretty awesome, but the handle sucks. The handle is some sort of dense plastic, so I cut it down to fit snuggly inside 3/4" schedule 40 PVC. Then shoved it into the PVC as far as it'll go. drilled thru the plastic and put in a bolt to hold in place, and put a cap over the end (PVC glued).

Not too purdy, but I really like the feel of it, and I think it's bomb-proof.

I don't like stuff that sucks.

if you drill a hole at the butt end and attach a float, you can store it next you in the paddle elastic band. Nice to not have to turn around while fighting a fish + have an extra rod holder open behind you. Though with pvc you might be able to stuff it with foam and have it float.
