Booger sugar aside... I've found that most of the energy drinks and what not don't give you any energy, they just prevent you from sleeping.  In other words, your awareness and reaction time is still negatively impacted, you're just awake to watch the shit hit the fan.  I think a 30 minute nap on the side of the road is worth more than any energy powder/drink/food commercially available.

Not sure about the powder thing. But one thing that helps me is to take a 15min power nap. After kayaking, if I'm having issues keeping my eyes open during driving, I just roll into a Safeway or supermarket parking lot and doze off for 15min or so. I find myself a bit refreshed afterwards and that helps immensely and I subsequently have no problem in driving.
I did try Red Bull and that 5 hour energy drinks and they didn't work for me.

Yeah, I used to do skiing day trips to the Sierra - get up at 4 AM, drive to Tahoe, ski all day, drive home. I'd drive about an hour, pull off at Ice House Rd and pass out for 15 or 20 minutes, get up, and be good for the rest of the drive. Just a very short nap seems to be enough to do the trick.

I've also found that drinking water helps, like working through a 20 oz bottle or two.

Also ditto on the powernaps. I used to fish for stripers at night in Raritan Bay NJ and would take 20-min naps in parking lots all the time

Oh, that brings back memories!!  Chasing stripers at night all up the coast there... plenty of power naps at the Retreat House in Long Branch and Manasquan Inlet and Keansburg.  The only way to survive working days and fishing nights!  I'd avoid coffee and energy drinks so when I did sit down to take a powernap, they weren't getting in the way.

If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

Two 5 hour energy drinks back to back gives me a solid 4 hour no-bobble-head no-saggy-eyed drive home.
Keep 2 in my glove box at all times.

I tend to fall asleep really fast, which is not a safe tendency to have when you're driving.  Some years ago, I got up real early to go fishing, and when I was driving home at the end of the day I dozed off while driving, and woke up abruptly to find myself driving in the interstate median.  Fortunately it was a low angle median, and I was able to stop without crashing, and then drive back onto the road and continue.  But I was really lucky, because if I had fallen asleep in most places along that stretch of interstate, I would have had a serious crash.  That incident made me get really religious about monitoring my sleepiness when driving.  If I feel at all sleepy, I take a 15 minute power nap, which perks me right up.  I also carry soda with caffeine and caffeine pills, and chug some down as a preventative measure if I'm driving and think I might start getting sleepy.

Power naps work for me as well but I gotta put on a timer.  The timer gives me confidence to fall asleep otherwise it's 1 hr later...

Back in the day riding w/ Marv(Shicken), after a day of fishing, he would take naps while driving in situ.. I would see his head slowly nod at stoplights. Being spent myself and after getting tired of trying to keep him awake, I decided to just go with the flow and observe. Stoplight red - head slowly nods to down position and then snoring. Somehow he would wake like clockwork just as the light turned green. Repeat every other stoplight or so :smt102

I get sleepy whenever Im driving. The one works for me are sunflower seeds. Keep yourself busy and you wont fall a sleep. I find grabbing shark shield is a bit dangerous. If you feel the jolt might press the gas accidentally. :smt002 :smt001
