Looking forward to the derby. Can we store the kayak at MBK one day prior? The hotel I'm staying at with the family do not have space for it.

Question for people who have done derbies like this.... I have literally zero experience with derbies, and while I've been out on my new yak quite a bit (including a couple trips into open ocean), I really don't know squat about Monterey Bay fishing. In other words, I have close to zero chance of winning and that is totally okay with me.

That said, I'd be interested in joining just to meet people and learn some things, but I don't know if it's a good format for it. 80+ people launching at the same spot sounds really intimidating and I don't know if people will get mad at me for following them around trying to see how they go about catching stuff lol

It certainly can be a great way to get out and learn a new area and get some advice from fellow anglers!  Lots of info on the site as well, try looking up previous reports for the derby and see who the winners were.  No joke, several people have won this and other tournaments with little to no experience.  That's fishing!  Any outcome is possible and you have the same chance as everyone.  Be happy to help break down the areas most people fish and what you might target.

It's been years since I've been on the water so I'm in the same boat. But from what I remember, kayak fisherman are a good bunch that help each other. I wouldn't have any reservations.

That's exactly why we have derbies.  Bragging rights, yeah.  Cool prizes, yeah.

But most important, a chance to have fun meet people who might become your best friends, and build the community.  And, we ARE a community.  WElcome.

When we meet in the morning before launching, we can find you someone to partner up with or hang out by no problem.

ps You'll probably win.  LOL
