Just curious of what people do with their rusty hooks.  Since hooks are cheaper, do you A) Put them aside and use new ones, B) WD40 and un-rust them for more use, or C) Both A & B?

I have heard that rusty hooks give off some iron taste/slick.  Not sure if its true or not.
I have been WD40 them at the end of the season and file, but some rust seem hard to get out (or I just dont want to spend the time).
So, looks like it's going to be WD40, file, and red nail polish :)

Soak in vinegar to remove rust.  WD40 is short for "Water Displacement Formula #40." It has solvents that attack rust, but it's far from good at it.  Acetic acid (vinegar), however, directly reacts with iron oxides to dissolve them.  After a soak in vinegar (agitation helps), then spray with WD40 (or any other favorite light oil/solvent) to slow future rusting or paint them as you were.

Use em rusty, the rust holds the fish better like extra barbs, and you get the added benefit of a little extra iron when you eat the fish!  :smt044

I just sharpen and keep using them unless they are bent or the barb rusts off.

I am pretty good about washing all the rigs I've used that day. I've learned to carry less out there with me over the years so I'm going through less.  Last year, I made it a commitment to not buy salmon gear that year.  Still havent... Ususally only toss the really tore up hooks.  I'm diligent about washing and sharpening

Good tip, dumping my hooks into a vinegar solution and they will go back to WD40 solution after  :smt007

I like to think I am diligent about washing too, but the rusts told me otherwise :)

If the eye of the hook is severely rusted then take pliers and twist it to test strength. That is one spot you do not want to break under fishing stress. The rust on the hook shank is inconsequential. Just keep the point sharp.

I am literally looking at a bunch of those right now and thinking the same thing.

I had a rusty hook problem just like you and found myself consistently sharpening after every use. Now, I just go stainless steel if I can find them at a decent price.

I use these mason jars from Hobby Lobby to remove rust from nuts and bolts.
https://www.hobbylobby.com/Crafts-Hobbies/Glass-Crafting/Glass-Containers/Cylinder-Glass-Mason-Jar/p/21890
Usually fill them with PB Blaster or Goof off.
They are small so it doesn't take a lot.
Tight seal and I can let them soak for however long I want.
Pick them up, give them a good shake to agitate them.
I remove whatever I had in there, seal it back up and reuse the liquid inside for the next round.
Could easily do the same with vinegar and fish hooks.

I recently used a rust eraser on my questionable hooks with good results.
“I’m going fishing.”  They said, “we will go with you.”

I had some time and some rusty hooks that I meant to replace. I’m usually good about keeping my gear clean and avoiding rust, but these hooks didn’t get that memo  :smt044

At any rate these hooks are heavy wire assist hooks for butterfly jigs. I tried soaking both in CLR for an hour. That got some surface rust off, but not as much as I hoped. So one hook is going to now soak overnight and I’ll see what that does. The other hook I used some 220 sandpaper and a hook file for maybe 1-2 mins per side. Nice and sharp again!

Pics are 2 bad hooks and 1 good to compare. Then after a soak in clr with nothing else on one, the sanding one the other, and the good hook as a comparison again.
