Hey anyone here have any current recommendations for a good paddle leash? I want one that chokes around the paddle and not velcro. Also a decent length. I was at Claveys recently and they had some nice ones but not what im looking for. Im not looking to start a debate on whether one should use a leash or not. Just looking for a good recommendation for a quality leash

Do people make their own? If so, is there a recommended material?

I've been using these for  few years now. They work fine and are short enough that they don't get in the way. I unleash my paddle for launching and landing.

Bungee cord and plastic clips work for me. The cord really doesn't need to be very long on a kayak, so you don't need something super long or stretchy.
I don't like stuff that sucks.

I have one with the velcro and I've made my own too. The ones Ive made have a stainless S clip on one end and a loop on the other to attach like the one in the previous amazon link. Mine are just long enough to lay my paddle over the side to be out of the way as needed. I used paracord but found it unreliable and then used 1/8"-3/16" braided cord.

Bungee cord with a loop on one end to attach to the paddle and the other end with a carabiner to attach to the kayak. Cheap and it works

Another vote for bungee cord.  $10 get you 20+ feet or more, 3/8".  Good for all kinds of stuff too.

Genius! But that could be hard to find outside of a museum...

Definitely make my own. SS carabiner at the end that connects to the kayak, small section of shock cord, poly pro strap and yes, Velcro around the paddle.
Reason for Velcro is I want to be able to take it off the paddle in a heartbeat if the situation deems necessary.
Also need to remove it during entering and exiting surf launches and it just makes it easier.

100% on board with DIY. I didn't really like any of the commercial options. You can also get the length perfect if you DIY. I used 1/4 inch bungee with hog rings and shrink tube on the carabiner/boat end, and a perfection loop with velcro cable tie on the paddle end.
