Hello All,

We were not able to run the Derby last year for obvious reasons. I am also thinking that our usual date of June might be a little too soon with Covid still an issue. That is why I am proposing these dates. We would limit the number of sign ups and of course this would all be on our beach outside.

I also want to hear from you to see what you think of us throwing a derby. I should have plenty of prizes but might struggle with getting a kayak donated as the factories are still back logged and we are having a hard time getting them. We can't even order prowlers right now! Was thinking of doing a 40$ buy in and a raffle. Every sign up gets a free swimbait! All proceeds go to the Salmon and Trout Restoration Project of Monterey Bay. Since the fires hit them bad last year it will be great to get some help

Let me know what you think

I think this is a great idea. By the fall things should be in a pretty good place and I think a lot of people will want to participate in a low risk social activity like this. I'm in, even if the first prize is just bragging rights.

I will not vote - would try to make whatever date you decide on.  I will be watching though, because I hope to possibly do a September Gimme Shelter this year.  Can't commit until I get the vax and things chill a bit more.

Good move, Adam.   :smt001

I’m not a tourney kind of guy but studies of superspreader events point mainly at indoor not outdoor events and activities, no big surprise

This isnt coming from a virologist but I do follow this stuff with a certain degree of self-interest(which includes family, friends, and patients and families who are stuck in ICUs where I work)

So if it’s purely about safety you should go for it  As long as you’re outside anything short of drunken bro-hugs and sloppy kisses should be covid safe

great idea , I think most peeps would just like bragging rights , in facts some of the best "first-second-third " prizes were some of the simple or hand made items donated by some of our more artistic members , like a gaff or a plaque from  wood burl , just my .02

I want to make this tourney for once. And have no preference on days.

I also agree with the above statement, no need to spend big $$ on a prize.

I'm supportive of the idea to get tournaments going again. I'm hoping by the fall this is all under control and we can get back to some sense of normalcy.

I guess the TastyKake crowd isn't invited.

I think you nailed it.  Limit the number of sign ups to ensure distancing is easy and have it outdoors.  I think that's responsible and in the right frame of mind.

I'm in, regardless of the date.

A trip to Costco carries a minimal risk of catching Covid, and the risk for any reasonable outdoor activity is (and always has been and always will be) immeasurably less than a trip to Costco.

Having said that, I suspect we'll see significant outbreaks continue for many months, or even years. The J&J vaccine is the only one that was tested against any of the new Covid variants, and it was only 72% effective versus 95% for the mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna). There also seems to be reason to believe that the mRNA vaccines will be less effective than J&J against variants. There are more variants coming online all the time and they tend to be more infectious than the original. The only way to stop a new-and-improved Covid is to keep it out of the country, and that's never going to happen. Of course, I'd like to be wrong about all of that...

Anyways, I hope that this tournament (and all other kayak fishing stuff) happens on schedule, regardless of the Covid situation...

Always look forward to this get together.

Prizes are fun but on the bottom of the list for me. ( Because i never win  :smt005 :smt005 ). Plus i dont do participation ribbons.

Raffles for PIF, the gathering of friends and shenanigans is all i need.   :smt001
