I’m curious to try for Hali north of OP. Been looking at Hunters Point, which looks like a good 4 mile north of OP. That’s too far with a kayak, especially since I want to launch when tide is coming in (so will be paddling against the current).

Do people know if launching from nearby India Basin is possible? Any tips for fishing in Hunters Point?

Thanks!

Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

Thanks! This is perfect.
Do you know if the mudflats at Jackrabbit are a show stopper at low tide? I got the Hobie Cart. And plan launching at incoming tide, when sea level is somewhere between -2ft and -1ft

Power to ya’ on that launch, kinda ghetto?  I wouldn’t go alone and you cannot see your car from the water.  My state park ranger buddy was the ranger there for 2 years and worst park of many for trouble.  Don’t leave anything valuable in your vehicle.  Im not just trying to keep you off the fish :smt005...nastiest tested water in the bay besides deep Richmond harbor...others may have a different opinion. :smt006

+1. Best bet is OP. There's also pier 52 launch and a new park with a launch south of pier 52.

Crane Cove Park just south of the Chase Center is an easy launch but parking can be an issue. Rode the tides in the tandem from there to the A-Frame and back the other weekend - great trip but no fish.

Islais Creek is a good launch, parking is easy. Just a little paddle out to open water.  i've never had a problem parking there but decide for yourself.

And as others said, the public boat ramp just north of Chase is easy as well.

A powerboater said they caught a couple out in 40-50' of water last week off the waterfront.

Cheers,
Brad

I checked Candlestick Park Area a couple of weeks ago.  The park was closed, so you cannot park inside to access the launching area.  There was a spot near the 1st pier (not a public fishing pier) that is closer to the water, but it is a rocky shore (bad for launching at low tide unless you have a super light kayak).  You have to squeeze in your kayak between parked cars and trailers, then lift it over a short wooden fence and a bunch of garbage to access it.
The Jackrabbit beach area is also harder (long walk plus wooden fence and garbage) to access due to parking lot closure.  I think for me it is more trouble than it is worth to launch around there now unless of course if fishing becomes very hot there.  :smt001

Thanks Eddie for saving my day off  :smt005
Maybe I’ll just try OP. So say I still decide to go north towards Hunters Point, when the tide is incoming. In this case I’m paddling against the current. Other than the workout, is that a bad thing for Halibut fishing? I know that the natural presentation is to drift with the current, but was wondering if folks have any thoughts on this?

Eddie - are you talking about India Basin?  Does anyone have experience with this place?

Don't go to India Basin to launch and don't go to Candlestick.  It may look like "nice, new condos" at India Basin, but it's still one of the worst areas in SF. Middle Point Rd still the main road bisecting Hunter's Point and runs through 4 different housing developments, each having different "neighborhoods" that still shoot at each other.  There's a war going on in the Bayview that the news isn't covering... although 3rd St and Quesada St has seens some coverage lately.  There are shootings every night and sometimes daylight hours.

As for Candlestick, you run the risk of having your car broken into.  Lots of tweaker in RVs. Lots of shootings out there as well.  Don't be there after dark.

There are better places to launch. You can try Brisbane or SSF and paddle North to Candlestick.  Be safe.

Thanks! Where in Brisbane do you recommend launching? Looks like OP is the only place..

Whatever it takes to keep your bait on the bottom, with tide, against tide, trolling, drifting, the fish are south of OP as well, no need to fight your way up unless you like torture...
