Change the registration to Crash's address.  I'm sure that's why he posted.  There are other areas of California that don't require smog checks either.

We are the only county in the entire state that can go to church or eat at a restaurant.  All the cool kids are here.

If you change registration to Alaska you don't have to pay much for registration either!

A few months ago, my Tundra  had a check engine light come on.
Did some research, and the part was $600.00
Told to a buddy of mine who is a pretty good wrench, and he hooked up his code reader, cleared the code.
It never came back on.

Don't ask me to name the part as my CRS is flaring up...  :smt003
He surmised the cause was overfilling the gas tank, overwhelming I think an evap canister???

Try clearing any codes, maybe get lucky.

Amazon sells dongles you can plug into the OBDII port to both read and clear the codes.  If the code isn't cleared, it will just keep coming back.  You might dodge the bullet this way. They are as cheap as $25.  Read the reviews to see what works best for your car.
Used to be auto parts stores could read your code and advice, but then the auto repair shops got the legislators to make it a law that only certified mechanics could do that.  I have a local one here in Placerville that will read codes, advice and clear for free.  I always tip him $20 for his time though.  Best advice I ever get.  Once the problem was the gas cap wasn't tight.  My wife could not twist on the cap until it clicks, so it didn't seal.  I'm sure the dealer service department would have charged her many times more than $20 for that piece of info.  Support you independent auto mechanic and all independent businesses.  They are our neighbors and love to help so long as they can make a living at it.

+1 to that.

I have an older Sequoia and have a great mechanic in Rocklin that I go to.  I support local whenever possible.

I had a check engine problem and the code was an unspecified vapor leak.  He had the car for most of the day trouble shooting the problem and was able to identify the problem through process of elimination.  He didn't charge me anything for the trouble shooting.  (At least 4 hours of labor).  If I had gone to the dealer I would have been out of pocket for an outrageous sum of money.

I let the car set for 7 or 8 days as I was trying to figure out what to do with it. Finally, I decided I'd just take it in to a local mechanic and get an estimate. I drove down the hill, and as I was about to pull into the shop, I noticed that the engine light was not on. So I drove around following the routine to reset the OBD monitors, as described here:

https://m.smogtips.com/smog-question/2728/2004-Honda-CRV-OBD-II-Monitors-Not-Ready

The light still had not come on, so I stopped at a smog test station, and it passed. I don't understand why the engine light would come on (and stay on) every time I started the car for a week, and then decide not to after a week off.

And now you know... the rest of the story...

Glad to hear your resolution was painless.

But this quote...my kid had to do an ancestry project for 6th grade we did the  genealogy and discovered that Paul Aurandt was a not very distant relative. My great greats are awesome n common with him. I had no idea, and by the time I found out no one was still alive who could explain why the falling out or distancing. Understanding that side of the family has reunions every year and a couple hundred might show up. A couple aunts took me aside and told me they knew about the relation but that it was never talked about.

I have resigned myself to the fact that I’ll never know the rest of the story.

We discovered other weird shit too. My kid was able to trace our relations back to the mayflower.  She also traced us to another famous Californian, not direct but with a common ancestor, one Sarah Pardee Winchester.

My sister had a cat named smog, so obviously this is all relevant to the thread. I hated that cat.

Definitely relevant, especially in winter... That's some mysterious ancestry stuff you have going on.

I had an uncle who did some very extensive ancestry digging many years ago. He had a bunch of authoritative-looking stuff, one part of which showed that we had a native American relative back about 4 generations. More recently, I did a genetic test, and there was no native American detected, so that was apparently all bogus. Other interesting tidbits showed up from the genetic tests, like one person who is closely related but had been put up for adoption and would never have been known about without genetic testing. Also, we're supposed to be German, but it's actually more Scandinavian (my wife says my Viking roots explain the kayak fishing), and the majority of the close genetic matches that we've found are British.

Ancestry can be interesting.  My maternal side is rock solid California (Pfeiffer-Striegel).   No "famous" ancestors but the Pfeiffer name is interwoven in much of California (parks and beaches etc).  Places with little smog.

Cool for nowhere man.  Sounds like it might be a vapor leak issue that will come back but for now he saved a few $$. (Just a swag but I had a similar issue a couple of years ago)

My wife went on a bender trying to find my true tree.  Originally in ancestry early years, Filipino, Chinese, British...recently, not British but German...novel, yet useless, unless for medical curiosities or expanding the story for the kids sake...

Hey kids...come and sit and grab my ear horn, let me tell about your great great great grandpa who walked miles in the snow with some fruitcake in his pocket from Germany to the Philippines and settled on the moon and got lonely so he made it to a little fishing village in Utah where he holds the freshwater poke poling Blue Fin Tuna record of all  time...730lbs...no pictures though as cameras weren’t invented yet... :smt006

Your’re sure the cat’s name isn’t spelled Smaug?  Better check the records, more appropriate for a cat that one would hate... :smt006
