I've made some jigs and flies during the COVID-19 lockdown.  I got about 3/4 bucket full of them.

Thanks all for the compliments.  I'm nowhere as good as those guys at Tackleunderground.  They truly have some masterpieces.  I catch more on my flies than jigs.  I have not catch anything on the octopus jig.  The last 3 outings (party boat), I lost the octopus jig to the rocks before I catch any fish.

I would definitely buy those. I tie flies myself, but your clousers make mine look like a hack job.....which they are. ;-) Those jigs and irons are almost too pretty to use (please note that I've used plain torpedo weights as lures before...just attach a treble to the sinker!). Do you pour from your own mold?

I noticed you are using 90 degree jig hooks for your flies....any reason why you aren't using a straight J hook? I've also used Eagle Claw 60 degree bend jig hooks, the old EC413 (which are hard to find locally these days) to tie clousers/deceivers/whistlers. Have you tried these as well?

Once I can overcome my seasickness, the plan is to try flyfishing for rockfish. I've even got the right setups for it. But right now, it's all me and my boys can do to get 3 hours of conventional fishing before we go green.

@ albiec22,
I have acquired quite a collection of molds over the years.  I do pour my own jigs.  The material cost for an 8 oz jig is probably around $3.00 to $3.50, so I'm more daring to use it around rocky bottom.  As for flies, I used to use straight J hooks, but the flies tend to ride sideways.  That's why I switched to worm hooks and 30 degrees jig hooks, so the fly will ride correctly.  I mostly ties clouser variants and used it on dropper loops.  Recently, I went back tying it on straight J hook and put a wire loop through the hook eye to make it into a drop shot fly.  Kind of like the spin shot hook the the bass guys use.  The large black fly is tied on a modified 8/0 Kahle hook that is bent near the hook eye.  It is meant for lingcod.  I like Kahle hook because it has an extra long shank, to get away from those teeth.  I like to experiment with different materials for the tail of the fly.  Recently, I'm starting to use jumbo yarn for the tail.  The fly with this type of tail moves like an eel.  It's super absorbent, so you can load it up with procure.  I fish with flies, but I don't fly fish.

I don't sell any of my stuff.  The best way to kill a hobby is turning into a business  :smt044.  Anyway, if you run into me at HMB, I can give you some to test.

@ albiec22,
I have acquired quite a collection of molds over the years.

Very cool! I was just about to ask whether you were using the dragontails from Hareline:
https://www.jsflyfishing.com/hareline-mangums-original-dragon-tail-uv2-treated?child=SM-730760-GRAY&utm_source=google_base&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=gbase_feed&_vsrefdom=adwords&gclid=CjwKCAiA4o79BRBvEiwAjteoYLwmSArAdVdy0Hio9Z9m8_wQDCTrTbNhxmtOsaCrIv24e4CcDLUfBhoCHZwQAvD_BwE&p=1

But leave it to the flyfishing industry to overcharge something as simple as a piece of shaped jumbo yarn! Have you tried using synthetic wig hair? I've been using Kanekalon wig hair with great results. You can get a big pack of super jumbo braid for $3 which will last for at least a few hundred flies, plus it comes in all sorts of colors.

Tying clousers on J hooks are kinda tricky. To make them ride correctly hook point up, you need a straight or turned-up eye. You also want to put more material on the top of the fly (the side with the hook point). It also helps if you add keel weights to the bottom of the fly. The dumbbell eyes also work in that fashion. I've been experimenting lately with small gauge plastic tubing with ball bearings sealed inside. The thought is to try to mimic the action on a jerkbait. I've also tried those wiggle discs as well, but I can't find any big enough that would move a 4oz jighead.

My wife thinks I'm crazy, all this attention spent trying to catch a damn fish when it should be on her! LOL!

The large jigs are tied a mixture of Kanekalon and bucktail.  Same goes for the flies.  Can't complain, cheap and it works great.  Thanks for the tips on tying the clousers.  Yup, dragon tails are way over priced for what they are.  I've gotten my limits of rockfish with the jumbo yarn and no sign of tears on it, so it's pretty durable.

That's a surprise. I was going to say that that looks like a ling killer...
I don't like stuff that sucks.

Curious to know what kind of paint/surface treatment you use on the jig heads.  Nice clean work there.

It's also a rock magnet  :smt013.  I lost this jig more so than other jigs.
