Dude! Adam, look at that pic you posted and the similarities in the two bellies that are right next to each other! :smt005

And Danglin, how is JTF a sore winner?  Come on bro, I swear I didn't know my ling was bigger than yours, it was a suprise to me also!!!  At least you didn't have to watch me catch the winning fish right in front of you, remember the shark derby??  You bumped me out of second place.  Alls fair in love and war.  You were a worthy adversary.

Peace bro and congrats on placing second at your first Elk appearance.  Thats quite an accomplishment.  JTF..

I'm going to need some help selecting a reel to go with the rod that I won, because up to now I've been a Big 5 and Walmart guy, figuring it was only a matter of time before that stuff went into the drink for keeps.

Me TOO!  Big5, has been my REEL place and now I'm goona have to "break bread" for a REAL-reel.
Tom, Adam.... I must confess that up until last year, I didn't own a reel worth more than about $50.  I just didn't think it was necessary to spend more money in a sport that's tough on equipment.  I have since broke down and finally bought a few reels retailing for over $100 and matched them up with decent rods in the $50 to $100 range.  Believe me, quality reels will be noticeable and pay off someday when you hook that once-in-lifetime drag burner.

Well, Ya probably didn't even know/mean what set me off,

When ya weighed in and beat me, I congratulated you and said " I guess I could use a Paddle "

You just blew me off and said " Whatever ".....

Kind of sensitive on my part to be put out by that....

No sleep for 4 days, 2 Dramamine on board, I was walking into

walls shortly after that,  and I was in quite a bit of pain, reason I had to come in early....

So those factors may have contributed towards my " Attitude ", and taking what you said the wrong way.....

  All Apologies,   :notworthy:

Your Definitely Showing Championship Form Now.....

 Again, Really... Congrats...

I was not feeling right about a " Sickly Ling " taking first anyway,  Did not seem right :drool

Can't wait for my WON to come in the mail today, I'll Let ya know if they got your Good side :smt005,

But,  I Know now to watch out for........

                            "The Mercenary" :smt068

 All Good,

  Thanks ............ Danglin

O.k. I feel better, I figured I'd thrash what i already had and then when I NEEDED better quality, I'd know more about what was gonna work for the YAK.....and IT IS ABOUT THAT TIME!   I bought Mooch's old SPIREX spinner and got 2 butts and a Ling and the drag is BURNT.....got to send it and another to Alan T. for some lovin.

Sorry in advance for minor threadjack.
I've been super happy with my Abu reel for $85. I got it after watching Sean's rockfish schpiel at the fred hall show. It's handled 30lb spectra well, with no "sucking into the sideplate" problem I've seen before. I did go up to 30lb with the spectra though. My only gripe is the puny handle, but someone at Elk mentioned a "power handle" accessory for the small abu's. Can anyone  point in the best direction to find one?

Fishermans warehouse usually has them.  They cost about $20.

Many thanks guys. I found one at (where else) Cabela's for $15. Of course, while at the site I just hadda pick up the "mooch endorsed" orange fish gripper as well. Can't wait to try it out.
Yep, the reel is great for the rockfish, and handled the moderate hali at bean quite well too. I am stoked to try it with the power handle next week.

A few totals from the trip...........
Miles driven     = 297@3hrs / ride home 3.75hrs
Miles on water = 12
Hours spent on the HUNT= 10.5
Distance from the beach/north launch to the Camp= .8 mi. (gps'd)

and a different angle of JTF and his LING

        Miles driven = 2,600
        Ride Home = 17 hours
        Rockfish Tourny = Priceless

Thanks to all. Great time. A special thanks to Ben and his lovely wife and James and Eric. You people feel like old friends. Thank you for that. Looking forward to the Baja trip with James and Eric. It's on. Here's a few pics from my angle.

I have more pics, but the damn state insists I actually earn my sheckles now. More to follow.......
So I'm packing my bags for the Misty Mountains, where the spirits go...........

Hey Don, I'm sure whatever I said was most likely a misunderstanding, I was pretty delirious from running up that hill in my wetsuit and the damn eye candy :smt050 distractions trying to slow me down.  I honestly dont remember, but then again, who brought that damn wine, I was cloudy the rest of the day.  jtf..

More thanks to all who put in the time and effort in order for this event to happen; the White family, the town of Elk, Erik for the raffle, Chuck and his crew of frymasters, and of course all the folks of NCKA for providing the friendly atmosphere.  And of course Bill, without his help I would have missed the event this year after my stolen car/kayaks fiasco.

Congrats on your victory, John.  Way to cash in some karma...
