Are you getting enough lumbar support with your current seat? When I first started out with my Hobie I had pretty bad lower back and knee pain. I think the culprit was that I wasn’t getting enough lumbar support from the vantage seat so I made a backrest by stringing 3 small pieces of pool noodle together. I never leave without it now.

I’ve had knee pain related to weightlifting, and the few things that worked for me was improving my overall flexibility (esp hips, hamstrings, and ankles), foam rolling the muscles around the knee for 15 minutes before workouts, and wearing knee bands during and after workouts.

Glucosamine + chondroitin works wonders for some people, so that is also something you can try. You may have to take the supplement for a month or longer before feeling any improvement however.

I had knee pains from snowboarding and kayaking.  You might try the following options or combination of them:

  • Try to raise your seat position
  • Adjust mirage drive stroke length
  • Wear knee compression brace - can get a pair for $10 from Amazon
  • Take some joint supplement - Glucosamine

Wow, so much thoughtful advice! Thank you, everyone. I have taken notes on all the suggestions so I can follow up on them.

in Cycling pain in the front of the knee is usually a seat too low or too far forward.  Same applies to the hobie i think, at least it was for me. that'd mean setting the drive so that the nearest stroke is farther away from you.

Opposite is true for back of knee.

of course, you should "spin" rather than mash-- higher cadence, lower "power" as well

stretches.  some involve a foam tube, and they hurt..breath thru the stretch.
