Glad you're okay.  A Sharkshield is a must these days... and especially this time of year.
We're gonna need a bigger boat!

Glad your ok.  I wonder if anyone has statistics on what color kayaks are bitten most.
A friend of mine had his hand bit off in Hawaii while on a yelllow body surf board. It was a large bull shark. The bioligist thought the  shark thought he was a sea turtle because of yellow color. Good thing he didnt get bit in California the  DFW would not have considered it a Shark Attack as they assign intent to the shark in thinking that it made a mistake.

Assigning intent to fish as though they are capable of mens rea is one of the more entertaining things about shark bite threads on social media.

From what I have read and I may be wrong, Sharks have single cone receptors or light cells .

I think it means they don`t have color vision like we do. Not sure if that means they only see black and white but it may mean they could possibly be color blind in some way.

IDK.

Maybe colors like  yellow, orange, or red have a contrast against a bright surface ?

Maybe it was a vibration from the drive system that pissed it off

Only the GWS knows

And as far as bleeding your catch and moving away ...better move far.

Supposedly  GWS can detect one drop of blood in 25 gallons (100 liters) of water and they can sense even a little blood up to 3 miles , so either way they may track it to the general area .

Besides its saltwater they`re always there as CDM would say

This is interesting. I think the jury is still out, but it looks like (pun?) sharks are color blind. Without at least two cone pigments that absorb different wavelengths of light, hard to image the complex biological adaptation needed to overcome monochromatic vision.

If the retina is dominated by poor acuity rod receptors and monochromatic vision, it does suggest a black and white stripe pattern would be a deterrent in that such stark contrast patterns would not be associated with prey species and less likely to elicit an attack behavior....

I'm glad Dave had his stuff together and did things right. It may have saved his life. It's hard to read a sharks mind but I think they just enjoy a chew toy now and then.

Was gonna say, it's a common thing to see DIY stripe patterns on surfboards at ocean beach. Might consider spraying some on the bottom of my Revo once I get it  :smt044

Glad you are safe, Dave. Thanks for the report. Very helpful to know what went right/wrong.

Holy smokes, Dave!  That's nuts man.  So glad you came away relatively unscathed.  Can't wait to hear the tale in person next time we get together to fish.

Be well,

Norm

Glad you are OK Dave. Sandlance and I were at the cove that day too. We actually spoke with you that morning near the green can.
Later that day, a boater came to my camp with a bag of your stuff he recovered floating in the water. He asked if I knew where you were camped so that he could return it to you . I think they left your stuff at the deli. Hope you were able to get it before you left.
Anyway welcome to the club which nobody wants to a member of. Hope you don't stop kayaking because of this. Get a shark shield. I truly believe they work.

Thanks for the info on the yard sale left overs.... I am curious if nothing else what is there. I will give them a call. If anyone heads down there and lives in Sonoma County I would appreciate any help to bring it back.
Thank you,
David

Follow up. Fish and Wildlife will be picking up boat to get DNA.... interesting.
