It was a sad day last Friday when I lost my bike-seatpost dodger. Conditions were pretty rough at the time, and I was in a rocky area. IMHO, that one was near perfect, as it survived a ton of snag infested fishing.

In comparison, I'd say the heavier copper is probably preferable over sandy bottoms, as it will surely get down to the bottom and create a ruckus. But, in rocky places, the bike seatpost ruled!

I tried making a new seatpost-dodger, only to discover that not all seatposts are created equal. I found 2 more unused seatposts around the homestead, one of which I could not flatten. The other was extremely difficult to flatten, and then it tore when I tried to make fine bends at the edges.

I'm not sure what to try next, as I'm out of seatposts. I think I'll make a run to the metal supply store and look in their scrap bin for inspiration...
Copper pipe of the same diameter as the seat post? Bike seat posts, depending on quality, will vary in hardness.

My goal was to have dodgers about 6" long and 2" wide.

I used 3/4" copper pipe, the heavier grade. The seatposts (I forget the exact diameter) were only slightly bigger. So they were a little over 2" wide.

A Giant brand seatpost made an awesome dodger, but a Ritchey seatpost (a little heavier and thicker) was impossible to work with--probably better as a seatpost, though.

I see your issue there,

Giants do often go to become pretty good dodgers, we trade most of our good pitches to the dodgers once we've used all their talent.  Maybe go Giant -> Dodger again, always works according to history.

I'm sure there's some magic galvanic action going on that big hali's  can't resist, like copper bracelets and back braces!

I was thinking about hiring Brett Favre as my spokesperson, but my current favorite version is aluminum, so that plan is on hold. I'll post some details on the aluminum version as soon as I can get a break from my hectic work schedule...
