I used YAKIMA - Crossbar Pads for my Subaru Outback factory roof rack.

+1. I've used noodles and larger black pipe insulation on factory crossbars to eliminate scratching an provide some cushion - both work fine but when sliding heavier kayaks like my '19 Outback, they didn't always stay in place the way I would like and are prone to tearing. When I upgraded my crossbars to Thule, I bought these rack pads because I wanted a more permanent solution. I rarely car-top these days, but theses pads are always in place and ready. I've been very happy with them.
