Such a tragedy.  Condolences to the family.   :smt009

I posted up on Facebook about safety and resources (including this community of course).  I hope it wasn't too soon, but the importance of safety standards is too critical to skip it.

I hope that the next time we have a little community debate about pushing safety on other users we can keep in mind that our overall intention is prevention.  Being judgmental or obnoxious is one thing, but making sure we always speak up about safety is vital to this sport and to this community.  Thanks for understanding also that I feel much more obligated to speak up due to guiding and running a big event.  I'm not JUST an asshole!

Stay safe, everybody.

We get new people in this sport every day and there is more to ocean kayak fishing than just buying a kayak and a fishing pole. Keep preaching and setting a good example Eric. You influence more people than you will ever know.

+1

I`d like to find out more details, as Doug posted the young man launched at  approx. zero six and pinged at 0640.I`m not familiar with the area so I was wondering if he was waiting to put on the PFD   , I`ve seen guys launch without and dress as they paddle out ..why IDK..in a hurry i guess..I was also thinking  could he have been nailed by boat ?

Either way no PFD .

I feel bad for the family.

Most likely scenario is he snagged up or got pushed up on a rock and capsized, waders filled, he couldn't self rescue with waders on, he took off PFD to try to remove waders, and then either lost contact with the kayak or got hit in the head with it or ??.

Very sad to hear about this tragic event.

Definitely do not wear chest waders while kayaking.

Go with a solid kayaking buddy who cares about your safety.

His family said he was a strong swimmer so I really think the waders is what held him down. If you get 10 gallons of water fill your waders its an EXTRA 100lbs of weight tied to your body, making self rescue very difficult.

Your life is worth more than 200$ worth of king salmon meat.
