Went the cheap route and made a gaff out of an old Ugly Stik, a sharpened nail, paracord, and superglue. Trust me it's a lot more secure than it looks-- I've stabbed a multitude of things with it already!!  :smt003

That thing made me smile. It's got heartbreak written all over it.

Yep, buy the hook.  But you could use a large U bolt with one end sharpened, and maybe bent outward a bit. Probably cost you the same as the hook.

Will check out the hardware store. I just don't wanna spend several hours trying to sharpen a blunt end.

Seemed like a good idea, but  - The hooks are SS, most commonly available U-bolts are not. You can find em in SS, but they’ll cost about as much and you’ll still have to sharpen it. Most likely with tools used on ferrous metal, so you will be introducing rust to the picture.

I applaud the DIY spirit. But of all the places to cut corners, doing so with the mechanism that gets your catch into the kayak seems like tears in making.

Oh no...the broken hearted smile...he'll get two or three great gaffs out of it then it may wiggle a little and we could start a go fund me for a gaff hook for him to electrical tape 5 thick to that rod and he can start again.  I am intrigued by the "Gaff Chronicles"  including my own reflections...I lost one recently gaffing up and correctly except the hook was facing away from the fish.  I could’ve gaffed my kayak if I planned it any better... :smt006
